Visit The Biggest Open-Air Laundry Service in the World

Dhobi Ghat is a well-known neighborhood in South Mumbai, famous for its biggest open-air laundry service in the world.

It was built in 1890 while the British Empire was still ruling this part of the world. This 140 years old open-air laundromat washes half a million pieces of clothing each day, by hand! Hotels, hospitals, and wealthy families are Dhobi Ghat’s biggest customers.

How the Washing is Done?

The washing is done in an old-fashioned way, in washing stations, by the washers who call themselves “dhobis”. Firstly, when the dirty laundry arrives, the dhobis write a code at the back of each garment, so that no mistakes can happen, like not giving back the right amount of clothes to the owners. After the sorting, clothes are soaked in soapy water and beaten on the flogging stone.

More than 7000 people, regardless of gender, earns its living by working at this huge laundromat. This job and its secrets are passed from one generation to the next. Because of its size, Dhobi Ghat is a very popular tourist attraction among travelers and it earned its place in history as well by getting listed into the Guinness World Records book.
