Traveling Outside The Box: What Exactly Are Rainbow Gatherings

Rainbow Gatherings are not an easy thing to try and fit into a single definition, as not even all the members of the Rainbow Family agree on what it is exactly.

The Rainbow Family started in North West USA in the 1970s and has been growing internationally ever since. Most regions in the US and Europe have a Rainbow community that meets periodically and once a year, in a remote forest or another spot out of the way, they meet for a Rainbow Gathering.

As a traveler, this could be one of a kind experience to come across. The organization is non-political and anyone is welcome to join. It is home to people who feel comfortable in the fringes: hippies, new-agers, bikers, geeks. Rainbow Gatherings feel a little bit like old-school festivals, with putlocks, tents, drumming, and dancing, there are no schedules or rules.

Another aspect of the gatherings is that they don’t allow the use of technology. Find them in the nearest forest, desert, or hilltop by following the colored ribbons, and leave your phone off. Rainbow gatherings don’t welcome digital living and don’t include electricity on site. All and every sound and vision you will experience all come from nature and from humans socializing.
