Tourism to hallowed, solemn sites has been increasing in recent years. Natural human curiosity related to discovering places that have a sordid or tragic history leads many of us to plan visits to places where authentic tragedies and disasters have happened.

It is very important to be respectful when visiting this type of site. Here are some things to keep in mind about visiting these places tactfully.

Always Follow Posted Rules

Any place you visit is bound to have rules to help preserve and protect the site, and solemn places are no exception. It is extremely important to follow written rules so as to not show disrespect to the historical memory of the place.

Don’t Take Inappropriate Photographs

With the proliferation of mobile phones and inexpensive cameras, it is almost impossible to find a traveler that isn’t taking pictures while on vacation. However, when visiting solemn places, be sure to be prudent and keep that camera in your pocket when the situation calls for it.

Avoid Loud Conversation

Solemn sites like memorials are places for reflection and memory, and loud conversation can ruin this spirit. It’s okay to share thoughts with friends and family while doing somber visits, but don’t break into a loud conversation or laugh when it’s totally inappropriate.
