Trekking in the Sahara is one of the most rewarding and spectacular experiences a person can have. As beautiful as the trek may be, it is of even more important that you go prepared.

Here are the things you really ought to know if you are thinking of taking a hike in the desert.

Bring Extra Water

We really can’t emphasize this enough. However much water you think you need, bring more. The scorching sun will cause your body to sweat and you will lose a lot of water. It’s subsequently essential that you stay hydrated.

Do Not Touch The Plants

Not grabbing a cactus may seem obvious, but many of the plants in the Sahara have poisonous spikes that can harm your skin. Even if they look harmless, it is best to avoid touching the plants altogether.

Visit In May Or October

May and October are the best times to visit as temperatures are milder and sandstorms are less frequent. Between June and September is the worst time to visit and temperatures are dangerously high.

Dress Lightly

Dress in light-colored clothing as this will absorb less sun. Wear a hat to keep the sun off your face and keep your skin covered so that your skin does not absorb too much sun.

Inform Someone of Your Whereabouts

Even if you are going by car, it’s important to let friends know where you are going. The desert stretches for miles and the last thing you want is to break down in the middle of nowhere and have no one come looking. 4G isn’t exactly a hotspot in the Sahara.
