The Semien Mountains are an Incredible Trek

The Semien Mountains, located in Northern Ethiopia, have some of the best multi-day hiking trails around. The combination of sheer beauty along with unique plants and animals makes this a top destination for any outdoor lover.

Hikers can choose any amount of time (from 1 day up to 13 or 14 days) but the most popular trek is the 3-4 day trip from Debark to Gich or Chennek Camp and back. This trip includes some incredible views along with reaching an altitude of 3,600 meters, which brings cold and windy nights.

The entrance to the park has a small entry fee, and a local armed “scout” is mandatory due to the ongoing conflict with Eritrea. While these fees are small, you can cut down on them by joining a small group of other hikers doing the same route as you.

Some of the highlights include the Jinbar Waterfall, a fast stream of water flowing over an incredible cliff edge. The viewpoints are some of the best in the world, and the Walia ibex are the native animals that can be seen climbing the cliffs.
