The Magical Island of Cat Ba In Vietnam

Just a few hour bus ride from Hanoi lies the magical island of Cat Ba. Here, you will find humongous untouched jungles and the beautiful beach destination of Halong Bay.

In recent years, Cat Ba has become more of a developed area thanks to increased interest from tourists. This means there is lots of accommodation available, including the buzzing Woodstock hostel. The hostel is located right on the beach and is vegan friendly and dog friendly too. There are plenty of activities and everybody is extremely social and up for a good time. It’s not ideal if you want an undisturbed sleep but if you are looking for a quick getaway with good vibes and delicious food at less than $4 a night, Woodstock is the place.

The jungle is just 15 minutes by bike from most hostels and is a 1km hike to the peak point. The climb is tough but the view is one of the most breathtaking you will ever see. Close by the jungle are multiple caves which are definitely worth exploring.

If you just have a couple of days to explore Cat Ba, do the jungle hike on day one and go to Halong Bay on day two. For $20, you can go on a boat tour (lunch included) and explore the bays, snorkel and even go kayaking. The best part is that you will be ready to get the bus back to the city by 4 pm.

🏝Ha Long Bay🏔 Is it on most travellers must see list. But hoe to have a great experience in such most touristic place in the whole Vietnam without a feeling of being a mass tourist? I’ll tell you all about it ⠀ 📍My route was – Flying to Hai Phong, which is much closer that Hanoi. Bus from Hai Phong to Cat Ba, there you can find plenty of daily tours to the Lan Ha bay(part of the same huge bay as Ha Long, but 100 less tourist boats), prices from $15-20 and that includes transfers to port, food on board, kayaking and visiting of some islands ⠀ 🗺 If you are not really a planing person, then flying to Hanoi and taking the whole tour including bus transfers and everything else is much easier, but I would question if I want such a kind of experience ⠀ So here’s quick overview of Cat Ba ⠀ 🚌Transportation – taxi or bikes, from $0.2 per 1 km, buses to other cities – $4-5 ⠀ 🏡 Accommodation on Cat Ba was the cheapest we saw in Vietnam, £6 per room in the hotel with breakfast included ⠀ ⛴ My opinion is that this is the best deal you could get, one or two night cruises are not as good due to bad accommodation options and prices for them are just unbelievable as for Vietnam. Choosing a day tour allows you to enjoy the beauty of the bay in full, and gives you time to discover other not less interesting parts as Cat Ba island, or even Ninh Binh which can be reached from Ha Long City in just a few hours by super comfy sleeping bus
