If you are thinking about visiting Zagreb, Croatia, you are probably wondering what is the best time to visit this charming city. Well, continue reading to find out.

For Fun Experience: From May to September

To have the most fun in Zagreb, visit during the summertime. This is when the city is at its finest, with music festivals and other cultural events being in focus. You can also use the opportunity to make a day trip to one of Croatia’s summer resorts for a great time at the beach. Keep in mind that this is also the time when there are a lot of tourists, and accommodation can be hard to come by.

For Laid Back Experience: From October to November and from March to April

Tourists that want to have a laid-back experience in Zagreb and explore the city properly should visit during the fall or spring. The weather is perfect for sightseeing; not too hot to wear you down and not too cold that you have to worry about extra layers of clothes.

For Affordable Experience: From December to February

If you want to see Zagreb on a budget, make sure to visit during winter. This is when the accommodation is cheap, and the prices of other services usually drop due to the lack of tourists. However, there is plenty of fun to be had in Zagreb in winter, like Christmas markets, food tours, and museum visits.

Zagreb is one of the most underrated European capitals, but it has a lot to offer to those who decide to visit it. It doesn’t take long to explore the city itself, so you’ll have just enough time to embark on a fun road trip—and these three allow you to kill two birds with one stone.

Plitvice Lakes + Rastoke

Located just two hours away from Zagreb, Plitvice Lakes is one of Croatia’s biggest natural wonders and you shouldn’t miss them for the world while in this country. You should also consider checking out the nearby Rastoke village, often referred to as “the small lakes of Plitvice”.

Varazdin + Trakoscan Castle

Varazdin is one of Croatia’s most popular baroque cities, and it’s a heaven on Earth for architecture lovers. On your way back to Zagreb, you should also make sure to check out the nearby Trakoscan Castle, dating all the way back to the late 13th century.

Ljubljana + Bled Lake

If you want to get out of Croatia altogether and check out another European capital near Zagreb, you’ll be happy to learn that Ljubljana is located in its close proximity. If you carefully plan your trip, you’ll explore the streets of the Slovenian capital pretty quickly and have just enough time to visit the nearby Bled Lake.

Zagreb is one of those cities that offer the perfect mix of contemporary and classical architecture. If you happen to be a bigger fan of the latter, you won’t run out of new places to explore in the Croatian capital, and these three are a good place to start.

Zagreb Cathedral

This magnificent Roman Catholic church is Zagreb’s most recognizable tourist landmark, but its history has been plagued by war and natural disasters. It was originally built in the 13th century and went through several reconstructions over the centuries before being restored to its former glory.

Mirogoj Cemetery

The final resting place of many notable Croatians also happens to be one of the city’s most picturesque spots. Built by Hermann Bollé in the Gothic style during the late 19th century, Mirogoj is hailed as one of the largest and the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe.

Ban Jelačić Square

You couldn’t miss this spot in Zagreb even if you tried because it’s the city’s central square. It features buildings that belong to different styles, ranging from classicism to secession, and some of them happen to be the oldest still standing in all of Zagreb, dating back to the 18th century.

The Museum of Broken Relationships houses countless mementos of past relationships that came to a close and the moving stories behind them. It’s one of Zagreb’s must-see attractions that you shouldn’t miss for the world, and here’s a couple of things you should know before buying your ticket.

Read Away

This isn’t one of the museums you can simply skim through without paying full attention to each item on display. Make sure to carefully read each of the stories they’re accompanied with – it doesn’t take a lot of time and it’s definitely worth it.

Bring Tissues

Visiting this museum can be a truly cathartic, but also an emotional and heartbreaking experience. All of the stories you’ll read are deeply human and extremely relatable, and some of them will wrack your heart.

Stick Around

You shouldn’t leave the Museum of Broken Relationships right after you’re done going through all the items. Writing down your own story, browsing through a store, or grabbing a drink at the museum café is also an option.

If you’ve experienced a hangover at least once in your life, you know how much pain it can be. However, we never thought that someone would actually make a tribute museum to hangovers! That’s exactly what one Croatian university student did and now everyone who visits Zagreb has the chance to explore the Museum of Hangovers.

This unique place features rooms full of objects collected by people with hangovers. The aftermath of a drunken night is not a joke, but it can still get pretty hilarious. The museum holds things like abandoned wedding dresses, random receipts, and everything in between.

There are also a few interactive exhibitions that allow you to try beer goggles or to share your hangover stories. A gift shop offers many booze-related souvenirs you can take home. As the person behind this quirky museum, Rino Dubokovic, says, its purpose is not to glorify drinking, but to save fun stories of time spent with friends. The museum’s plans for the future include warnings of over-drinking.

Heading East of Europe? Here are five reasons you should consider adding Zagreb, Croatia to your to-do list.

Its Unique Museums

Zagreb is the home of several museums, including your standard museums of science and natural history. It also contains several that are a little more out of the ordinary. For example, if you head to the city center you can visit the Museum of Broken Relationships, which contains objects of failed love affairs from around the world. You can also check out the 80’s museum which is an intact house from the 80s with a twist. Instead of demanding you ‘do not touch’ the exhibits, you are invited to interact with everything and can even try on the clothes! The Museum of Illusions is also fabulously unique and a fun way to spend the afternoon.

Its Thriving Street Art

Zagreb artistic and creative personality can be observed on the surface via its vibrant street art. You can visit the Tesla mural which celebrates the achievements of the inventor born in Croatia, as well as several other colorful murals around the city.

It’s Close to Plitvice Lakes

The Plitvice Lakes make up a stunning national park which you simply must visit if you are in Croatia. With clear blue lakes and impressive waterfalls, the lakes are definitely one of the best natural spots you can visit in Europe. It’s also only a two-hour bus ride from Zagreb.

It’s Cheap!

There are currently 0.13 Croatian Kunas to the Euro. This means that you can eat out and dine in for quite cheap. The public tram from the city bus station to the city centre is only the equivalent of 50 cents if you buy on board.

The People

The locals in Zagreb are friendly and welcoming of tourists. Crime in Zagreb is relatively low and it is one of the safest cities to visit if you are a solo, female traveller.

Croatia, a beautiful country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe has a rich history, especially Zagreb, the capital, with its stories dating from the Roman times.

If your travel doesn’t only require swimming in the blue Adriatic Sea, and you would love to learn more about the country’s past, the best way is to explore their museums. Let’s have a quick look to Zagreb’s must-see museums.

Museum of Broken Relationships

The Museum of Broken Relationships is located in the baroque Kulmer palace in the Upper Town and it is Zagreb’s unique, one of the most interesting and must-see museums. The hundreds of personal heart-breaking letters and bizarre souvenirs lead you through the history of emotional break-ups and unconscious love.

Museum of Contemporary Art

Located in Novi Zagreb, the Museum of Contemporary Art gives an insight into the Croatian contemporary world. However, this wasn’t the first location of the Museum. In the 1950s, the Museum was situated in the Upper Town of Zagreb, with two different addresses. After many efforts, the new Museum opened its gates in December 2010.
