]]>“‘Ellie, why don’t we take a trip around the world in 80 days when we are 80?’” she recalled asking. After letting the shock settle, Hamby was all in. “Why not?!” she responded.
The pandemic caused the travel buddies to postpone their journey by a year, but at 81, they are still putting many of us to shame.
Travel has always been a point of connection for the Texas ladies who began taking trips together after both their husbands passed away. The 20-year friendship has involved more adventures than most people have throughout their entire lives.
During their most recent trip, the pair saw the Northern Lights in Finland, had dogsled rides in the Arctic Circle, tangoed in Argentina, threw coins in Rome’s Trevi Fountain, and rode camels in Egypt.
And, amazingly, they never lost a single piece of luggage during the three months!

]]>Based between Boston and Nantucket, Abbott is an avid traveler and is enthusiastic about keeping it local whether at home or abroad. According to Abbott, her goal with her platform is to inspire others to take a step out of their comfort zone and consider alternative destinations and adventures.
“Nothing could make me happier than hearing from a reader who has arranged travel plans to stay in an eco-friendly hotel that I recently recommended,” she notes on her website, explaining that she firmly believes that as we become better traveled and more mindful, culturally aware citizens of the globe, the world becomes a better place.
“The more I travel, the more I learn to be flexible and adapt,” she further shared her experiences in a recent interview with Misadventures with Andi. “The world has become such a small place, I hope to highlight destinations that might not be on everyone’s radar. Meeting and learning from others around the globe develops a much deeper understanding and I truly think education promotes peace and tolerance.”
Abbott puts her money where her mouth is. Her blog includes a dedicated section for “green living” where she shares her thoughts about subjects as varied as sustainable wine, healthy snacks, and eco-friendly travel gifts.
When trying to trace back her love of travel, Abbott jokes that she probably became a traveler in her mother’s womb. “I was conceived in Japan and long before I knew that fact, I taught myself Japanese phrases and to count in the language,” she explains.
“I wanted to learn all I could about the country. Seriously though, in my days before travel writing, I started and built a clothing and design business that manufactured in India and the Philippines. It was during that time I fell and love with travel and knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

]]>Based in Seattle, WA (where she shares a home with her cat and dog), Friend is very much dedicated to a life of travel, both locally and internationally. With some quarter-million followers on Instagram, and true to her last name, Friend has a knack for connecting with others, sharing her adventures in a meaningful and long-lasting way.
According to Friend, her love of adventure is tied back to her upbringing. “Growing up on a lake, I’d wake up to a low hanging fog and rain drops falling on the water,” she writes in one Instagram post.
Indeed, a love of water and fog comes through her unique photos, carefully curated. “There’s something so peaceful when this weather happens,” she reflects. “Everything becomes so quiet and all you hear is the rain hit the lake.”
Growing up near a lake is one thing, but Friend also explains her wanderlust through her unique connection with her late father. “My love for travel started at a young age because of my father,” she wrote in another post. “We had a Cardinal Cessna, so he made sure traveling and adventure was a big part of our childhood.”
Another spot that holds a special place for Friend is the Olympic National Park in western Washington: “Hands down, if you were to ask me the first place that really sparked my love for nature and the outdoors it would be this place,” she admits in one blog post. “The Olympic National Park is an expansive temperate rainforest, encompassing nearly a million acres and receiving an average of 138 inches (3.5 meters) of rain annually. It is a rare refuge for species dependent on old-growth forests and wild coastline (70 miles worth)!”
These days, you will often find Friend on the road traveling to the next destination. “One thing I enjoy about road trips is camping outside,” she notes. “It is so fun to make the campsite super cozy. I love smelling the fresh air when I wake up while being all bundled up in the sleeping bag.”
Her Instagram page and blog will inspire your next road-trip if nothing else!

]]>The post Take a Walk on the Wildluxe Side with Misha Gillingham appeared first on Traveler Master.
]]>Her travel blog and accompanying Instagram page, Wildluxe, is the sweet, sweet meeting point between luxury travel and the great outdoors. Sprinkle Gillingham’s sense of optimism on top and you’ll understand the appeal. Showcasing guest ranches, farm stays, lodges, safaris, and wild adventures, it offers inspiration, reviews, and information on the world’s top luxury wilderness travel experiences. Exactly the kind of inspiration we need in the days after Covid.
“I really do love every aspect of the job,” shared Gillingham in an interview with We Are Travel Girls. “The hardest part for me is lugging around all of the heavy gear all of the time. It’s a total pain. (Literally, my neck is always hurting). But worth it.”
A cancer survivor, Gillingham understands the importance of living in the here and now. In fact, her illness is what pushed her to further explore her passions. “It made me realize how fragile and precious life really is,” she says. “It has given me a huge zest for life. Every day we are here and have the chance to live and love is a beautiful miracle!”
Rather than traveling to the same big cities, seeing overrun tourist destinations, and waiting in long crowded lines, Gillingham seeks out the unique, less traveled, more intimate places around the globe. The places she chooses to feature on her blog are hand-selected and surrounded by exquisite natural landscapes which offer guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
But her life as a travel guru isn’t all fun and games. “I think many people have misconceptions of what it takes,” she notes. “They think its all fun and travel. It’s actually a TON of work. It’s not a 9-5 it’s a 24/7. You have to be able to turbo multitask and wear many hats.”

]]>We’re all for traveling on your own, but for your first time, we recommend going with a friend that you trust. You’ll have each other’s backs when push comes to shove, and you’ll have the time of your lives! Once you become more of a traveling veteran, you can go off on your own.
Do as much research as you can about the place that you’re going to. The more you know about the place, the less confused you’ll be about everything that’s going on around you. We’re talking landmarks, bus passes, foreign currency, language barriers—anything that could potentially trip you up. If you’ve prepared accordingly, your trip will be a breeze.
There’s no need at all to compare yourself to friends who have traveled to 47 different countries. This is your trip, and no one else’s. Your experience will be unlike anyone else’s, and that is a legitimate fact. So just ride the wave, give yourself a break, and have fun!

]]>The post Why You Should Keep a Journal When You Travel appeared first on Traveler Master.
]]>By keeping a handwritten journal with you on your travels, you may find that you have a lot more to say than you think. But more importantly, the feeling of putting a pen or pencil to paper is a lot more rustic and real than typing on your smartphone’s touchscreen. In many ways, it exemplifies the spirit of traveling and being outdoors.
It’s the tendency of so many people these days to automatically share their experiences with everyone in the world. While we certainly appreciate openness, we believe in some things being kept private as well. When you write something in a travel journal, you’re creating an intimate memory that’s for you, and you alone. This is something that you’ll have for the rest of your life.
Ten years, or 20, or 30 years down the line, it’ll be a true joy reading your journal from your travels all those years ago. It’ll be a lot harder for you to scroll back and find those momentary Facebook posts you sporadically posted. The journal, however, will last you forever.

]]>Alvaro Rojas is a 28-year-old traveler from Madrid, Spain who is attempting to be the youngest person ever from his country to visit all of Earth’s 197 countries. This means that he spends much of his free time wandering around some of the most under-visited and obscure countries in the world.
His travels are truly like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get!
It’s refreshing to find a feed like @wanderreds, featuring a traveler that visits countries that aren’t constantly visited and posted to outlets like Instagram. Instead of seeing a picture of the Eiffel Tower for the thousandth time, when you follow Rojas, you might see one like this, of the Faroe Islands!
Not only does Rojas keep us posted with shots of the places that he visits, but he also is sure to show everyone just how much fun he’s having while doing so. Instead of his 197 country mission being a burden, he has a great time while doing it!
You won’t regret giving this fantastic travel blogger a follow.
