The Amazon River is the lifeline of the sprawling Amazon rainforest. It holds secrets and wonders that have fascinated explorers, scientists, and nature lovers for centuries. From its massive water flow to hidden underwater rivers, here are three mind-blowing facts that make the Amazon nothing short of incredible.

The Most Powerful River

The debate over which river holds the title of the longest in the world—the Nile or the Amazon—has seen shifting opinions over the years. However, when it comes to the sheer volume of water it discharges into the ocean, the Amazon River is unrivaled. The Amazon discharges more than the next seven largest rivers combined!

Underwater River

Beneath the flowing waters of the Amazon, there lies another “river” of sorts. It’s a deep, slow-moving subterranean flow called the Hamza River. This underground river, discovered through the analysis of wells drilled by the Brazilian oil company Petrobras, runs parallel to the Amazon River at a depth of nearly 4,000 meters.

Astonishing Diversity of Life

The Amazon River and its surrounding rainforest are home to the most extensive collection of living plants and animal species in the world. Scientists estimate that about one-third of all known species reside in the Amazon Basin. This makes it the most biodiverse ecosystem on Earth!

Traveling in South America on a budget is not only possible but also incredibly rewarding. It can offer budget-conscious travelers the chance to explore vibrant cities, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage without breaking the bank. Here are three tips for traveling in South America on a budget.

Take Advantage Of Affordable Accommodation Options

One of the biggest expenses while traveling is accommodation, but South America offers a variety of budget-friendly options. Hostels are abundant throughout the continent and provide affordable dormitory-style rooms or private rooms at a fraction of the cost of hotels. Many hostels also offer communal kitchens where you can prepare your meals, further saving money on dining expenses. Additionally, consider alternative accommodations such as guesthouses, homestays, or camping in national parks for a more budget-friendly experience.

Opt For Budget-Friendly Transportation

Getting around South America doesn’t have to be expensive, thanks to the region’s extensive network of affordable transportation options. Buses are a popular and economical way to travel between cities and countries, with comfortable long-distance buses offering overnight journeys to save on accommodation costs. In some countries, such as Peru and Bolivia, local buses and colectivos (shared taxis) provide inexpensive transportation within cities and rural areas. For longer journeys, consider booking flights with budget airlines or taking advantage of special deals and promotions to save on airfare.

Embrace Street Food And Local Markets

Sampling the local cuisine is an essential part of any travel experience, and South America offers a wealth of delicious and affordable street food and market fare. From empanadas and arepas to ceviche and churrasco, street food vendors and market stalls serve up a diverse array of mouthwatering dishes at budget-friendly prices. Eating at local markets not only saves money but also allows you to immerse yourself in the vibrant culinary culture of South America. Be sure to also stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, and snacks from local markets to save on dining expenses while exploring the region.

Humantay Lake is a popular day hike in the region of Cusco, Peru. Many tour companies will collect you early in the morning from your hostel to drive you to this spectacular glacial lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Here are a few things you should know before signing up for a tour of Humantay Lake.

Prepare for a Wild Ride

To put it bluntly, the drive to Humantay Lake is terrifying. The single-track dirt road winds around the edge of mountains with a shear drop on one side. Be prepared for some seriously hair-raising moments when you round a corner into a herd of livestock, a jeep tries to overtake your minibus or a glacial stream blocks the way. If you’re not a fan of scary drives, this may not be the ideal trip for you!

Bring Warm Clothes

The hike to Humantay involves ascending to a height of 13,800 feet (4,200m). Even if it’s a warm day when you set off, it will be cold at the top! Dress in light, high-tech layers, and be sure to bring a warm coat, hat, and gloves.

Adjust to the Altitude

Don’t arrive in Cusco from Lima and head straight to Humantay Lake. This is one of the highest altitude spots on the classic tourist circuit in Peru and you need to acclimatize to the altitude before attempting the hike. Spend a few days in Cusco, drink the local coca tea, and take altitude sickness tablets if necessary.

Take a Camera

While it can be a long day with the early start, long drive, and two-hour hike, the views at Humantay Lake are truly spectacular. Bring your camera (make sure it’s charged!) and take some snaps of this stunning spot.

Suriname is a super small country of under 600,000 people and is located in the northeastern part of South America. It borders Brazil to the south, French Guiana to the east, and Guyana to the west. The official language of this small country is actually Dutch because it was colonized by the country back in the 17th century and only became a sovereign nation in the 20th century.

Although you might never have heard of Suriname, it is definitely a country worth visiting. It’s one of the most culturally diverse countries in South America and there is so much to explore there.

When to Visit

When you go to Suriname really can dictate what you do. The temperature is basically perfect all year round, always staying around the 70s, but in terms of rain, the rainy season goes from April through August, so any other time of the year will be great for all the outdoor activities the country offers!

What to Do

The capital of Suriname is Paramaribo, and it’s where most of the citizens live in the country. The city is on the Paramaribo River, so it’s still very much connected to nature. In the center, you will find gorgeous relics of the Dutch colonization in their magnificent traditional wooden buildings and homes.

If you want to learn more about the history of the country, go to Fort Zeelandia which was built by the French in the early 17th century. Now it homes to a museum about the history of the culture and country called the Surinaams Museum.

If you’re into hiking and nature, Suriname has so much to offer. Head over to the Brownsberg National Park which has the Brownsberg mountain, a tropical rainforest, tons of waterfalls and more! If you love birds, keep your eyes and ears out for toucans, parrots, and other tropical birds. And for animal lovers, you can be sure to see howler monkeys, armadillos, and maybe even a jaguar!

The Wia Wia Nature Reserve is another stunning site to see in Suriname. Located on the Atlantic Coast of the country, you can find a ton of beaches, areas to bird-watch, and beautiful mangrove swamps with their own ecosystems at play.

If you go west of the capital, you can take a coastal road trip on a picturesque road that will lead you to the Scottish settlement called Totness. Along the way, you can see amazing salt ponds and paddy fields.

Food

The food throughout Suriname is super diverse from the indigenous folks to the settlers and immigrants. One thing you will find that the native people eat are a lot of cassava products, like bread called khali and cakes called lolo casaba.

If you want a little more of an upscale dining experience, you have to go to Baka Foto in Fort Zeelandia. The restaurant serves a mix of traditional Dutch food along with other European cuisines, all presented beautifully made with local ingredients that really sing.

Oftentimes, a country has one spectacular tourist attraction that millions of people flock to, and for good reason. But these countries often have other attractions that are spectacular in their own right that simply don’t get enough love and attention due to their status in the shadow of the big player.

Moray, Peru’s hidden Incan gem, is a perfect example of this.

While Machu Picchu might receive all of the attention when it comes to Incan sites in Peru, Moray is a spot that is absolutely worth discovering in its own right.

Located just 45 kilometers to the southeast of Machu Picchu is Moray, an Incan archeological site that stands on its own as the most spectacular example of Incan agricultural practices that is left for us to see today.

Several terraced circular depressions, some of which extend up to 100 feet deep below ground level, are the highlights of this site. Archeologists have determined that these terraced features were built in order to cultivate crops such as potatoes.

The striking appearance of the remains of Moray and their deliberate geometric figures contrast sharply with the jagged, natural peaks of the Andes Mountains that lurk behind them in the region.

If you’re looking to plan a trip to Peru to see the wonder of Machu Picchu, make sure to make time for a stop at Moray as well.

Most people have never heard of the Bolivian city of Sucre, and that’s their loss. Sucre is actually technically the capital of Bolivia, though the city of La Paz holds a lot of governmental power as well. Sucre has been an incredibly influential city for over 10,000 years when it was inhabited by the indigenous people, followed by the Incas in the 15th century and then finally the Spanish who colonized it shortly after. Sucre is also referred to as the White City because of all the white colonial buildings the Spanish built.

There are many great sites to see in this city, including the Plaza 25 de Mayo which is the main square of the city. Not only is it the main meeting place in the city, but it’s also home to famous buildings like the Cathedral and Casa de La Libertad. Go inside the 16th-century cathedral and see the beautiful artwork and check out the Casa de La Libertad where Bolivia first got its independence from Spain.

When you go to the plaza, you’ll see all sorts of people and vendors, and you might even catch a little theatrical performance if you’re lucky! Don’t miss out on the food vendors you’ll see in the plaza because they sell some super delicious bites.

The southernmost region in the country of Brazil is Rio Grande do Sul, the home to more than 11 million people and a land that doesn’t quite fit in with the most common stereotypes about the largest South American country.

In fact, you will probably be shocked as a visitor that you can see these three things in Rio Grande do Sul!

A Wine Region

You probably don’t associate wine-making with Brazil, but there is, in fact, an important wine region in Rio Grande do Sul. Vale dos Vinhedos is a region located in the Gaucho Highlands region of the state where a growing number of vineyards produce wines like Merlots and Chardonnays.

An Old German Settlement

The majority of Rio Grande do Sul’s population is of European origin, and a surprisingly high number of Germans settled here in the 20th century. You can discover this heritage in Gramado, a tourist-oriented city that features German architecture, restaurants, and the Mini Mundo Park.

Huge Canyons

The mountainous terrain of Rio Grande do Sul is also the home of a collection of impressive canyons such as Itaimbezinho, Fortaleza, and Malacara. Waterfalls and rushing rivers are found in these forested environments that you can hike in to discover.

One of the most magical and beautiful types of landmarks is the fountain, which combines architecture, engineering, and nature in a way that is undeniably captivating. Here are some of the coolest fountains you can find in South America.

Magic Water Circuit | Peru
