Cross-country skiing has been around for a while but is still less well-known than the super popular downhill skiing. Whether you’re a big fan of skiing and want to try a different version, or have never tried any snow sports before, cross-country skiing is a great winter activity to try out.

Perfect Way to Enjoy Winter

If you’re someone who loves winter scenery and finds snow and ice beautiful, then cross-country skiing is perfect. It’s a way to access some stunning views and landscapes that may be covered in deep snow. Think of it like a snow walk with equipment to make it easier to move.

Gentler and Easier Than Downhill Skiing

If you’ve ever been tempted by skiing or are a seasoned skier, but are looking for something less intense, then cross-country skiing is perfect. You’re much less likely to injure yourself, and it’s much kinder on your knees and other joints.

Incredible Exercise

Despite being gentler than downhill skiing, it’s still an amazing whole-body workout. Similar to walking, it’s the kind of exercise that doesn’t feel too strenuous in the moment but will get your heart pumping and muscles working hard.

For many people, the arrival of winter is synonymous with one thing and one thing only: skiing. Their gear may already be packed, with reservations at favorite slopes booked months in advance. If you’re new to skiing, however, you may not be familiar with all of the ins and outs that go into planning a successful snowy adventure. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be so complicated—read on for some essential tips to ensure your first ski trip is a smooth ride.

Do Your Research

As with any vacation, thorough research is paramount to ensuring a seamless skiing experience. Don’t just go for the first place you see, or the one that has the best Instagram pictures—read up on a variety of hotels and resorts, considering factors like terrain difficulty, amenities, and accessibility around the property. Opt for one that caters to beginners with gentle slopes and experienced instructors.

Gear Up

Even in the best of circumstances, skiing isn’t without risk, so make sure you’ve got proper gear in order to stay safe and comfortable while on the mountain. Renting equipment at resorts can be costly, so consider renting or purchasing gear in advance to save money and ensure everything fits you correctly. Full ski attire should include weather-appropriate, waterproof clothing, gloves, goggles, and a helmet.

Look for Deals

Many resorts offer packages that include accommodations, lift tickets, and equipment rentals at discounted rates, so it may be worth taking a few extra minutes to inquire about available deals as you search for accommodations. Additionally, opt for lodging on the mountain property in close proximity to the resort to minimize travel time and avoid any hidden transportation costs.

When winter hits, the ski slopes are the place to be! According to the Holiday and Winter Travel Trends report by Vacasa, 30% of U.S. residents are heading to ski resorts during the chilly season, with Sugar Mountain in North Carolina and Park City in Utah amongst the top destinations. If you’re braving the slopes for the first time, here is a packing list to make sure you aren’t left out in the cold!

Ski Clothes

Keeping warm is a priority when you’re out there amid freezing temperatures. Layering is always your best bet as it allows you to remove items when indoors and the heating is on. That said, things like thermal underwear and fleece-lined leggings which can be worn under pants will keep you toasty regardless of the environment you’re in. An insulated jacket that is waterproof is a necessity for the outdoors, as are snow boots.

Accessories

If “cold hands, warm heart” is a phrase you identify with, you will benefit from heated gloves or glove liners. There’s nothing worse than feeling like you can’t grip your poles because your hands are freezing! A beanie will also keep your head warm (and cover up that helmet hair!)

Equipment

It can be difficult to see with fog, mist, and snow all around you, but clear vision when skiing is essential. Invest in a good pair of goggles so you don’t miss your fellow skiers or obstacles. A helmet designed specifically for winter sports is another must to prevent any head injuries in the event of crashing.

If you have an opportunity to go on a ski vacation but you don’t ski and are not sure if you’re going to have fun or get bored, don’t stay at home as there’s plenty of fun for everyone in the mountains. Here’s how to enjoy the trip.

Enjoy Alone Time

How often do you get a chance to be alone with all the free time in the world? Use the time when everyone else is skiing to read a book, write in a journal, listen to music in peace, or do anything else you don’t get time for at home.

Take a Walk

Just because you don’t ski doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the fresh air in the mountains. Go for a walk and soak in the bright snow, the green forests, and the sight of people having fun.

Enjoy the Resort

Some resorts offer plenty of things you can use to pass the time. You can check out the shops, visit the pool and spa section, and see what else is around that you can explore. Find a nice coffee shop and enjoy a cup of hot coffee or some other drink.

We can now say for sure that the pandemic has changed virtually everything in our lives. From our jobs to the inability to travel and the way we perform other activities, everything is different in 2020. This is also the case with skiing and here’s how it will look like this winter.

Reservations and Fewer People

You can expect fewer people at your favorite resort this winter, simply because there will be restrictions regarding the maximum number of visitors at any given point.

Lift Rules

You’ll likely be able to ride the lifts and gondolas only with the people you cam with. This means you can forget about meeting random new people who share your love for the winter sports, which is truly sad.

Season Pass Priority

At some places, you can expect the skiers with seasonal passes to be prioritized over those who want to purchase daily tickets. This is reasonable as the businesses want to acknowledge their returning customers, and will only be done in the cases when the maximum limit for visitors is reached. Make sure to reserve your place on time to avoid this!

The African country of Lesotho, enclosed completely in a mountainous area within the borders of South Africa, is one of the most underrated and underappreciated gems of the African continent.

While it only has 2 million residents and not a lot of cities or towns to see, its mountain attractions attract climbers and adventure seekers who have been lucky enough to discover this small kingdom.

Only two ski resorts exist in all of Africa, and arguably the best one is Afriski in Lesotho. Containing a top elevation of 10,571 feet and a vertical drop of over 1,000 feet to its base, skiers will have a great time shredding the slopes at an unlikely place at this resort.

In the Southern Hemisphere’s winter is the Afriski season, which lasts from early June until late August most years. During these precious months of the year, various slopes on the open are there for shredding thanks to the region’s cold climate, occasional snowfall, and snowmaking machines.

Not only will you find the experience of skiing or snowboarding in Africa a thrilling possibility in and of itself, but you’ll also find other experiences in these mountains such as mountain biking and hiking.

There is truly no way for anyone to be bored at Afriski.

So, if you find yourself looking for a unique thing to do during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter or the Northern Hemisphere’s hot summer, why not plan a trip to go skiing in Lesotho?

Just 2 months ago, the first indoor ski resort opened in North America in the new American Dream Mall. Located in New Jersey, Big Snow has 4 acres of top of the line technology keeping the arena at 32 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. The slopes are open 365 days a year and will be the first time that North Americans can go skiing in July. Here are two other amazing indoor ski slopes you could visit.

Ski Dubai

Being that this one is located in the United Arab Emirates, it automatically makes the list. Snow is not a common sight in this country, and the indoor ski slope has evergreen trees and Austrian chalets to make you feel like you are in the Alps. The longest run is 1,312 feet and there is even a snow park where children can have snowball fights and build a snowman as an activity not commonly experienced in that part of the world.

Chill Factore, Stretford, England

Manchester is no stranger to winter weather, but being that the tallest mountain in England is less than 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) tall, there aren’t many opportunities to ski in the country. In addition to different levels of slopes, there are many other snow activities including a Slip ‘N’ Slide and climbing wall.
