Located in Lisbon’s vibrant Chiado district, the Bertrand Bookstore (Livraria Bertrand) stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of literature. Since its establishment in 1732, the store has earned the prestigious title of the world’s oldest operating bookstore, proudly displayed on its door through a Guinness World Records certificate, regularly drawing visitors from around the globe.

Shelves Full of Literary Treasures

The store is comprised of multiple, interconnected spaces displaying a diverse collection of bestsellers and literary classics. If you notice another distinct scent other than that of aged pages, you’re not making it up—it’s the freshly brewed coffee in the café nestled at the back. Other than all the Portuguese literary gems, there’s also a small (yet noteworthy) English-language section.

Celebrity Literary Gatherings

When it comes to the most ancient bookstore in the world, there must be some fine celebrity gossip involved! Throughout history, Livraria Bertrand played host to intellectual giants like Alexandre Herculano, Eça de Queirós, and Ramalho Ortigão, who gathered there to discuss literature and politics.

How to Get There

The store is located a short distance from the Baixa-Chiado metro station, accessible via the blue or green line. For those exploring Lisbon with a Lisboa Card, the metro ride is free.

The island of Madeira is one of the most stunning places on Earth. With its beautiful coast and breathtaking mountains, as well as some of the best cuisine in the world, it has something for everyone. Here are three of the best reasons why you should visit Madeira.

Spectacular Scenery

As an island, Madeira is surrounded by beaches and ocean. Fortunately, these beaches are some of the world’s most beautiful, and they are relatively quiet as well. Moving inland, Madeira also has some pretty big mountains for an island, with Pico Ruivo the highest at 6,106 feet. There are many accessible walks in the middle of these mountains, and you can gain some stunning vistas from hiking here.

Amazing Cuisine

Madeiran cuisine is a very successful fusion of Portuguese and African culinary influences. Fresh seafood and tender meats are commonly found on menus here, and the traditional dish of Espetada (kebabs of marinated and perfectly grilled meat chunks) is not to be missed. Madeira wine is famous for its quality, and if you have a sweet tooth, Madeira cake is also well worth a try!

Climate

Madeira is also a very desirable destination because of its year-round temperate conditions. This means you can fit it in with your schedule and visit in the winter and still have a lovely time. It also means the gorgeous beaches and ocean will be ready for you no matter when you visit!

Located along the Duoro River which leads out to the sea, Porto looks very picturesque. Dotted along this river are some incredible bridges which are very impressive examples of some beautiful architecture and engineering.

Ribeira District

This medieval area is a beautiful sight to see and lovely to simply wander around. The cobbled streets are winding and narrow and dotted with brightly colored buildings, cozy bars, and traditional restaurants.

Food and Drink

The port wine produced here is world-famous and there are places all across the city which are perfect for sipping on this delicious drink with some tasty food to accompany it. Fish and meat are a big feature of the cuisine here, along with delicious sandwiches.
