Traveling to the Philippines is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience. You’ll enjoy natural wonders, vibrant culture, and great food and have an opportunity to engage in all sorts of fun activities. Unfortunately, like all popular tourist destinations, this Southeast Asia country hides some unpleasant experiences.

One of the things that can ruin your time in the Philippines the quickest is falling for tourist scams. In order to prevent this from happening, check out some of the most common ones and find out how to avoid them.

Broken Taxi Meter

Taxi scams are present everywhere, and the Philippines are no different. Here, you’ll most commonly encounter a “broken” taxi meter scam. The taxi drivers will say their meter is broken and will try to offer you a fixed price that is often double or triple what the ride actually costs. Don’t accept the ride for a fixed price and find a taxi that has a working meter.

Fake Tour Providers

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This is the approach you should take when looking to book a tour in the Philippines. Make sure to always do a background check of the tour operator before booking a tour and making a payment. There have been plenty of cases where the tour providers simply took the money from tourists and then disappeared without a trace.

Money Changing Scam

Don’t ever change your money on the street, not only in the Philippines but anywhere else. You might be approached by strangers in bigger cities, especially Manila, who are offering you attractive exchange rates. But they will use all sorts of tricks to try and scam you, including stealing notes while counting or giving you less money and then claiming they gave you the appropriate amount.

Pricey Kalesa Rides

Kalesas are vividly-decorated horse-drawn carriages that can be seen on any corner in the Philippines. The kalesa drivers offer tourists rides across the city but be cautious about accepting one. In some cases, they will rush you into the carriage and then immediately start the ride without even telling you the price. At the end of the ride, they will insist on some outrageous price. They also might tell you a lower price at the beginning of the ride and later say that’s just a starting fee.

If you’re one of those travelers who never shy away from unforgettable adventures and an adrenaline rush, you probably have a soft spot for volcanoes. The Philippines happens to be one of the best countries in the world to explore them, and here are some of the most breathtaking volcanoes that you can discover in this country during your visit.

Taal Volcano

One of several volcanoes lining the western edge of the island of Luzon, Taal is pretty popular with tourists thanks to its close proximity to Manila. The fact that it’s one of the most active volcanoes in the entire country isn’t stopping it from being a major tourist attraction, and its crater lake is a sight to behold.

Mount Pinatubo

Pinatubo is another active volcano in the Philippines that’s not struggling to attract tourists to its grounds. Located in the middle of a lush forest, Pinatubo is a popular hiking spot, with many hiking trails leading to its crater lake.

Mayon Volcano

Another show-stopping volcano on the island of Luzon, Mayon is the Philippines’ most active volcano, but people still can’t resist visiting it. Most people visiting the Philippines are there to enjoy its beautiful beaches on the Pacific shores, but this is not the only natural wonder that this archipelago has to offer. Volcanic and tectonic activity transformed it into a true natural marvel, with several lakes located inside the leftovers of the volcanic craters.

Lake Pinatubo

Some of the lakes in the Philippines have been around for thousands of years, but not this one. What makes Lake Pinatubo so unique is the fact it was actually formed by an eruption that took place in 1991 and led to the formation of one of the most stunning crater lakes near Manila.

Taal Lake

The eruption that led to the formation of this lake took place between 100,000 and 500,000 years ago, and its consequences are still largely felt. Taal Lake is still around to tell its tale, and it’s one of the Philippines’ most popular lakes despite its proximity to the country’s second-most active volcano.

Lake Maughan

Lake Maughan is located on the shores of Mindanao island, and it was formed during the eruption of a stratovolcano known as Mount Melibengoy. What makes it so interesting is that this volcano only had three recorded eruptions, and one of them left us with this marvelous lake.

The Philippines consists of over 7,600 islands that are home to an incredible amount of diverse species. Almost half of all the animals in this country are endemic, meaning that they don’t live anywhere else in the world, according to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

“Everywhere you go in the Philippines, you’re going to be surrounded by nature,” said Gab Mejia, photographer for National Geographic. “Each island you travel to will have different species.”

There’s also some bad news. Over 700 of the native species that live in the Philippines are about to be extinct, according to the same source. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an increase in illegal fishing and poaching has been noticed which only makes it worse.

When you visit the Philippines and decide to explore all the wonderful nature it has to offer, make sure to be respectful toward it. This can be challenging with more people visiting the destination, but there are ways for tourists to see everything they want to see and still respect the natural processes that are happening.

The rich history of the Philippines is recorded in the country’s dazzling array of culinary curiosities. From Spain and the USA to China, a myriad of international influence has informed these dishes. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting dishes.

Balut

Perhaps the most infamous Phillopino street food is Balut, a 17-day-old duck embryo. An intensely popular childhood treat, the egg is at its best when the embryo has not yet developed its beak, bones, feathers, or claws.

Kare Kare: Oxtail Stew

This is a stew made from ox tail, ox tripes, lots of vegetables, and flavored with roasted peanuts. The name Kar Kar refers to the Phillipino word for ‘curry’, which is a nod to Indian influence in the region.

Adobo

This is known to be the most popular dish in the Philippines and is an indication of the country’s rich culinary history. Made from chicken, pork, or fish braised in vinegar, the name Adobo comes from the Spanish word adobar, meaning ‘to marinate’.

Lechon: Roasted Suckling Pig

Considered the national dish of the Philippines, ‘lechon’ originates from Spanish colonial influence and is also a favorite in Spain and across Latin America. Lechon, from the Spanish leche for milk, is a slow-roasted piglet that has only been fed on its mother’s milk.

The volcano and its adjacent surrounding have been declared a protected area and its nearly perfect cone made it extremely popular with landscape photographers.
