While many people would expect the expiry date on their passport to signify the moment it is no longer valid, this isn’t always the case depending on where you travel to. With so many countries each implementing their own travel regulations, here is how long you need to have left on your passport in order to travel.

Passport Only Needs to Cover Your Stay

Some countries, such as Argentina, Japan, and the United States, are happy to welcome travelers whose passports are only valid for the duration of their stay. While you cannot stay after your passport expires, these are worthwhile locations to visit if your passport will soon expire.

Valid For Three Months

Most European Union members, including all of those in the Schengen Area, require you to have a passport that is valid for at least three months in order to be allowed entry. This includes Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.

Valid For Six Months

While not a common requirement, some popular tourist hotspots including Dubai, Israel, and the Maldives require travelers to have at least six months left on their passports in order to enter.

Bahamas

Departing from Florida’s ports of Miami, Port Everglades, and Port Canaveral, there are a few closed-loop cruises that you can take to the tropical Bahamas. Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Cruise Line are some of the companies that offer this opportunity.

Passports are really cool, aren’t they? They allow you to travel overseas and see the beauty of the world. But these pocket-sized books are even more incredible than you think. We bet you didn’t know all they can do! Here are three facts you probably didn’t know about passports, but definitely should.

Your Passport Has Identity Theft Deterrents

If your passport was issued after August 2007, you have an e-passport, which has a small integrated chip in the back cover that stores your passport information and a biometric identifier based on your photo. To keep your passport from becoming a victim to high-tech identity theft, there are metallic elements in the cover that make it impossible for it to be digitally read until it’s opened.

If You’ve Gained or Lost Weight, You May Need a New Passport

If your appearance has significantly changed, you may need a new passport. This includes losing weight, gaining weight, facial surgeries, trauma, facial tattoos, or piercings.

Passports Can Be Different Lengths

A standard-issue passport is 28 pages long, but you can request a longer, 53-page passport at no additional cost when applying or renewing it. If you fill up all 52 pages, you’ll have to apply for a new passport even if yours hasn’t expired.

Revenge travel is a big trend in 2023, with travelers attempting to visit as many countries as possible to make up for lost time due to the pandemic. But in order to do that, you need a fairly strong passport. Citizens of most western countries can visit other nations without a visa, but it is in the east where the true power lies. Henley & Partners has once again released its annual list of the world’s strongest passports, and the top-ranking nation is far from surprising.

For a fifth year in a row, Japan dominates the Henley Passport Index, being able to visit 193 of the 227 listed destinations without needing a visa. In contrast to 2022, however, the birthplace of sushi holds the title alone as Singapore has dropped down a spot.

Coming in joint second are Singapore and South Korea which are able to venture to 192 countries. Following them are Germany and Spain in third, with 190 destinations, and, finally, Finland; Italy; and Luxembourg tying for fifth with 189.

The worst country on the index? That “honor” goes to Afghanistan with a low score of just 27 countries being accessible without a visa.

A new digital certificate will soon be available for Europeans who want to travel. It should provide a way to track Covid-19 vaccinations and tests. The holders of the passports will be able to cross the borders around Europe and help the economy and tourism recover.

The new passport will allow travel within the European Union. It will state if the holder has been vaccinated or got a negative Covid-19 test recently. Other information it will have includes the recovery process of those who have contracted the virus. The current plan is to develop the necessary infrastructure by summer.

How will it work? Every hospital, testing center, and other health institutions will be assigned a unique digital signature. The system will allow for all the signatures to be verified everywhere in the EU.

All EU states will accept the new certificate and the holders will be exempted from the travel restrictions.

What about privacy issues? “It will respect data protection, security, and privacy,” said European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen. “The Digital Green Pass should facilitate Europeans’ lives. The aim is to gradually enable them to move safely in the European Union or abroad—for work or tourism.”

Before you can take off for your next adventure, make sure your passport is still valid. Did you know that the time to process U.S. passports is between 10-12 weeks? Once you’ve submitted your application, there are a few ways to check the status. You’ll need your last name, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Here’s everything you need to know about how to check your passport.

Check Passport Status Online

You can check the status of your passport application on the State Department’s website. Status updates are usually available 14 days after you’ve submitted the application. The status will be “Not Found”, “In Process”, “Approved”, or “Mailed”.

Check Passport Status by Phone

You can call National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 or 1-888-874-7793 to check the status. The center is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST. The automated system is also an option for checking your passport status and it’s open 24 hours a day.

What to Do If You Can’t Wait

If for some reason you can’t wait between 10-12 weeks, you can pay an extra fee to expedite the application and have it processed in four to six weeks.

For emergencies, like illnesses, deaths, or injuries that you need to travel outside of the country for within three days, you can make an appointment for the emergency passport service by calling 1-877-487-2778 or 1-888-874-7793 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST or 202-647-4000 outside of those business hours.

For international travelers, your passport is the number one most important thing that you must protect while traveling. Losing a passport or having it damaged could result in a major travel headache, something that no one wants to experience.

So, what steps can you take towards keeping your passport safe? Here are three useful tips that can help.

Buy a Nice Cover

Passports are surprisingly flimsy for being such an important document. One way to add an extra layer of protection that will help it from being torn or ripped is a nice cover that will protect its exterior. These are available in all kinds of materials, but leather is my favorite.

Keep It in a Secret Location

Traveling with a passport can be nerve-wracking because it is a prime target for thieves to try to steal. Keep your passport, whether it’s physically on you or not, in a top-secret location that cannot be easily found by would-be robbers.

Don’t Let the Elements Ruin It

A rainstorm, a snowstorm, or extreme hot weather can be the death of an otherwise safe passport. Don’t allow your passport to be exposed to extreme conditions, which can lead to the RFID chip and pages of your passport to be ruined.

2020 is, without a doubt, a very complicated year for traveling abroad. Quarantine restrictions and uncertainty revolving around the COVID-19 pandemic have made it nearly impossible to plan out leisure travel outside of your home country.

That doesn’t mean that we won’t be able to go back to traveling abroad in the future, however! While stuck at home, why not take these steps to be sure that you are ready for your next trip abroad?

Make Sure You Have Your Documents in Order

Before you travel to another country, there are documents that you will need to have in order to be legally granted access. Depending on where you live and where you are traveling, you might need a passport and/or a visa that allows you to spend time in the country as a tourist. These processes can be done mostly online.

Start Studying the Basics of the Language

If you are traveling to a country where the native language spoken isn’t your own, why not try learning at least the basics of the language spoken there? Apps like Duolingo and free online classes mean that you can at least get the fundamentals of nearly any language down while at home.

Begin Taking a Look at Flights

Flight prices have generally dropped due to the ongoing travel situation, which could mean that this is the perfect time to take advantage and book your flight for the future. Most airlines are offering very flexible cancellation policies, which means that you will be able to book without worry.

2020 is a challenging year for travel and those who love to go on trips. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced many travel plans to be canceled and many dream-trips to be postponed due to the restrictions in place caused by the coronavirus.

Despite the current reality, there’s no reason that you can’t start planning your next dream trip while stuck at home without traveling! Do these things if you want to get a leg up on your next big getaway.

Start Looking at Flights

Flight prices have gone down and cancellation policies have been made flexible as a response by airlines to the pandemic as they look to boost sales. Why not look several months into the future to see if you can find a cheap flight to wherever you want to go, as travel may be possible then.

Research, Read, and Watch Videos

If you aren’t sure exactly where you want to travel yet, why not use this downtime to do some more research about potential destinations? There is a wealth of information out there that you can read and watch to start learning more about what place you might want to plan your next trip to.

Get Your Travel Documents Ready

Having travel documents that allow you to move from place to place is an essential part of being ready to travel. Plane travel always requires some type of identification, and if you’re going outside of your home country, be sure you have a passport. Visas might also be needed depending on where you’re going, so be sure to research what you need and get it done!

If you do not do a lot of traveling or only travel within the US and you are a citizen, you might not have a need for a passport. But, if you want to get away from the mainland and see a new place and be surrounded by gorgeous water, you can still go to these islands!

Puerto Rico

Even though Puerto Rico feels like it should be it’s own country, it’s still a part of the US because it’s technically a territory. This means that you can visit it without having a passport, all you need is an id card! Puerto Rico has amazing scenery, a rainforest, and so much charming culture and cuisine. Because they have many Spanish influences, it feels like you are really in a different world.

U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are a group of Islands in the Caribbean. There are many islands within the group, but the main ones are St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. These islands have some of the best beaches and water in the world, and they are all within the U.S. control so you can go to any and all of them passport-free! There’s much to explore on each island, including national forests, sugar cane plantations, and more.
