The Great Smoky Mountains region of the southeastern United States, shared between the states of North Carolina and Tennessee, is a popular summer vacation destination for people all over the country and the world.

The lush green mountains, rushing rivers, and majestic waterfalls make for an idyllic travel destination that only gets better during the summer.

One of our favorite activities to do whenever we visit the Smoky Mountains as a sports and adventure lover is whitewater rafting.

So, what is this activity? Whitewater rafting consists of an inflatable raft which is filled with a group of people, including a guide, which goes down a challenging stretch of river which can be filled with rocks, rapids, and unexpected drops!

A heart-racing adventure, the type of river needed for this type of activity exists throughout the Smoky Mountains region. From the Pigeon River in Tennessee to the French Broad River in North Carolina, you will find plenty of outfitters which offer up trips led by professional guides and with all the material you’ll need included.

If you want to get your pulse racing with a group of friends or family on your next trip to the Smokies in the beauty of this area’s nature, you can’t go wrong with a whitewater rafting trip. Give it a try!

While this region is a common destination, one town that doesn’t get as much love as it should in this area is the beautiful town of Hot Springs in North Carolina.

Nestled between the gentle peaks of the mountains and on the banks of the French Broad River, Hot Springs is a perfect destination for those who are simply looking to relax.

One of the biggest attractions of this tiny mountain town is the natural hot springs that it offers. These hot springs, which generally reach a temperature of 108 degrees, are known for having medicinal properties that ease muscle pains and other body problems.

A resort manages the hot springs, and both guests and visitors are allowed to bathe in the baths in order to enjoy these magical waters.

In addition, during the summer, visitors to Hot Springs have the option of going kayaking or tubing down the French Broad River. Offering fairly tame rapids and beautiful scenery, the river is a great place to plan an afternoon enjoying the best of what the Appalachian Mountains have to offer.

So, if you’re looking to have some H2O-centric fun in these famous mountains in the southeastern United States, why not consider Hot Springs, NC for your next trip?

Charlotte, North Carolina is known for a lot of different reasons, from the Panthers to the Nascar Hall of Fame, and more. But in recent years, they’ve come up as a massive player in the beer game, and if you’re still looking for the coolest beers to try, Charlotte, NC might be a place you should check out.

Wooden Robot

This place is great if you want your beer with some seriously unique flavors and quirky names. One of their best sellers is the Good Morning Vietnam, which is made with vanilla beans from Madagascar and Ethiopian coffee, though it’s actually a blonde ale!

Legion Brewing

Legion Brewing made its name by opening a second location in the South Park neighborhood, the first brewery in the area. Their most famous beer is called the Juicy Jay which uses a variety of hops to give it a rich but beachy, tropical taste.

Lenny Boy Brewing Co.

Lenny Boy is not just a great place to get delicious and unique beers, but it’s great for a crowd that also might want something else to please their palate. Lenny Boy has great sour beers, organic kombucha, and more so that everyone in your group can get something that wets their whistle.

Hot Springs, North Carolina is a town in the western part of the state. It’s famous for, no surprise, for the natural hot spring located in the town. This is actually quite an unusual site because it’s the only hot spring in all of North Carolina, and one of the only ones in all of the southeastern region of the US. The hot springs have been turned into a private spa, and when you go there are lots of tubs to choose from that are filled with the natural spring water. There are a lot of different options that the spa offers, but some of them are actually really reasonable in price.

Beyond the hot springs, you can enjoy access to the French Broad River and go rafting and kayaking as well! Hot Springs is also a site on the Appalachian Trail, so there are hiking trails that you can enjoy also. The closest big city to Hot Springs is Asheville, which is just 30 miles away. Asheville is the perfect place to go for amazing food, music, small batch beer, and overall cultural activities.

While the western part of the United States is more famed for its mountains, a slice of the Appalachians in the southeastern United States is one of the most beautiful places that the country has to offer.

Nestled between the eastern border of Tennessee and the western border of North Carolina, the Great Smoky Mountains is one of the most biodiverse and scenic places in the US.

Protected as part of the United States National Park System, the Smokies (as they are colloquially called) are an idyllic mountain retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city.

The third-tallest mountain in the eastern United States, Clingmans Dome, is part of the park. Visitors can see a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.

Opportunities for recreation abound in the park. Many people choose to go hiking to precious viewpoints such as Chimney Tops.

One of the most well-known rivers for rafting is the Pigeon River, which gives visitors a thrilling ride down a mountain river.

One travel trend that’s booming these days is vacationing to places where craft beer is king. Different cities, both in the US and elsewhere, now offer large concentrations of craft breweries where artisanal beer is crafted and served to the thirsty masses.

One American city that any craft beer lover has to visit is Asheville, North Carolina, a mountain town scenically nestled in a valley of the Appalachian Mountains.

Asheville has a unique and care-free reputation, and this character extends to the city’s beer scene. Despite only having a population of 92,000, Asheville hosts tons of craft breweries. The city in and of itself boasts nearly 30, and the surrounding region hosts even more.

It’s easy to take a stroll around Asheville’s comfy downtown area and visit lots of the breweries without using a car. One of our favorite Asheville breweries (which is located within walking distance from the city center) is Burial Beer Company. This brewery produces unique ales and offers a comfortable outside beer garden to enjoy your drinks in.

Other Asheville breweries in the city center with a fantastic reputation include Wicked Weed (IPAs and sour beers galore), Hi-Wire Brewing (good beer in a chic, industrial-inspired space), and Bhramari Brewing Company (a gastropub with an eclectic beer selection).

Asheville is truly a paradise for any beer lover. Go, and go soon!

Charlotte, North Carolina might not be the capital of the state, but the city is actually larger than the capital, Raleigh! Charlotte is famous for being the second biggest financial center in the US but is also home to some fabulous attractions that meld the south and city living perfectly. Whether you are into sports, the great outdoors, or exploring the big city, Charlotte has a little bit of everything for everyone.

What To Do

If you’re a Nascar fan, you’ve come to the right palce. The Nascar Hall of Fame is located in Uptown Charlotte, which is what the downtown of Charlotte is called. Visiting the Nascar Hall of Fame is a great place to take kids as well as adults!

Just 10 minutes from Charlotte is the US National Whitewater Center, and it is absolutely worth driving to. Not only are there ropes courses and loads of activities for kids and adults, but the whitewater rivers are just as intense as you will find out in nature. You can kayak or take a raft ride, everything there is really top notch.

Another great place to spend some time outdoors is Freedom Park. Known to the locals the Central Park of Charlotte, this huge park is located between two beautiful historic neighborhoods called Dilworth and Meyers Park. There is tons of grass to lounge, live outdoor concerts and events during the summer, and even a trail called Little Sugar Greenway that leads you to Uptown!

Once you get to Uptown, there are plenty of museums for you to enjoy. Levine Museum of the New South  is a famous museum that covers the history of the South post Civil War, which is fascinating and crucial to learn about when you’re in the south. There’s also plenty of art museums such as the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, which not only has an expansive permament collection, but also hosts jazz concerts during the summertime.

Where To Go Out

If you’re looking for great vibes, a fun atmosphere, and killer pastries, go to Amelie’s Bakery. The original is located in a neighborhood called NoDa, and is actually open 24/7!  Come to hang out with friends or even to play board games! There is another in Uptown, but the hours there are more standard.

If you want a little bit of a crazier time, head over to the Epicenter, where you will find more bars and clubs than you can imagine. Located in Uptown, the Epicenter is one large complex, so you can always hop from bar to bar, or just find one for the night that suits you.

A neighborhood that is known for great bars and restaurants is Montford. There you can find sports bars, chill neighborhood bars, or fun activities like the famous bowling alley Ten Park Lanes. Montford also has loads of incredible restaurants that use local products, such as Good Food on Montford. Peruse the area and you’ll be sure to find something that fits your style.

If you’re looking for an accessible, beautiful place to visit, look no further than the Smokies.
