A stroll down the bank of the Ljubljanica River is the quintessential Ljubljana experience, and you won’t be able to help but notice the many bridges spanning it. The Slovenian capital is home to many interesting bridges with pretty epic backstories that chronicle the history of this city.

Dragon Bridge

One of Ljubljana’s most recognizable landmarks, this Art Nouveau bridge was built at the turn of the 20th century. It’s not a coincidence that dragon statues were picked to adorn it, because the history of this city is plagued with legends about these mythical creatures.

Butchers’ Bridge

Butchers’ Bridge is located just across the street from the Ljubljana Central Market. Despite its simple exterior, it’s one of the city’s most visited bridges because it’s the best place for traveling couples to leave their “love padlocks”.

Triple Bridge

Like many of the bridges on this list, this one was designed by the famed Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. It consists of three bridges that connect the modern part of the city with the historical area on the other side.

Cobblers’ Bridge

Another trace of Jože Plečnik’s architectural style, this bridge once occupied by shoemakers and that’s how it became known by its current name.

Ljubljana is one of those cities that may look pretty ordinary at first glance, but the real magic starts when you are roaming around and discovering new unusual spots along the way—such as these three quirky places.

Metelkova Art Center

The abandoned Slovenian military barracks have been transformed into Ljubljana’s most popular art center with the punk-rock vibe. Covered in graffiti, folk art, tile mosaics, and weird sculptures, Metelkova is now the heart of the city’s alternative scene.

Dragon Bridge

Dragon Bridge may be one of Ljubljana’s most popular attractions, but that doesn’t take away from its quirky quality. This attraction adds an aura of mysticism to Slovenia’s capital—fairytale bridges decorated with dragon statues aren’t exactly something you get to see everywhere.

Cyanometer

This monolithic structure in the center of Ljubljana may seem pretty ordinary at first, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Its main purpose is to measure the blueness of the sky, as a way of showing the quality of air, and it’s best known for changing its color to match it.

Ljubljana is one of Europe’s most underrated capitals, but it has a lot to offer to passionate travelers. It’s home to many affordable retro hostels, and one of them even used to be a military prison back in the day.

Hostel Celica Art opened its doors to travelers in 2018, and it’s housed in a charming pink building, in close proximity to culture zone Metelkova. It’s impossible to tell this was once a prison until you step inside because its interior pays homage to its dark past.

This hostel features a total of twenty former prison cells with prison bars on the windows and doors. If you’re not in the mood to spend a night in one of them, Hostel Celica Art also features traditional dorms that come with a lower price tag.

To make the whole thing even better, each of the former prison cells has been redesigned into rooms with artistic concepts and unique stories. Each of them is a unique work of art, which pays homage to different artistic styles from all around Europe.

Most of us think about the same places when we consider traveling to Europe – London, Paris, Berlin, Rome… But the European continent is so much more than just a list of capital cities and there’s so much more to be seen in more overlooked places.

Let’s check out some of these cities, in case you want to go on an unusual adventure through Europe!

Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg has a small population of about 150 thousand people, which means you can fully explore it in just a few days. The city is home to the birthplace of Mozart and its Old Town, which is a UNESCO heritage site.

The city has eye-catching Baroque architecture and beautiful lakes and rivers which is why it’s generally considered one of the prettiest places in Central Europe – and that means something, considering how many absolutely stunning places there are in the region!

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is the capital city of Slovenia and it has a population of about 280 thousand people. The notable part? Slovenia was recently declared the cleanest country in the world and it has one of the happiest populations as well, making the energy of the country incredibly positive! The best places to see in this city include the beautiful Ljubljanica River, Metelkova and Ljubljana Castle.
