Often described as the “gateway to hell”, this smoking volcanic terrain is one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, but that’s not stopping local companies from offering tours in the area that include military escort.
Just like many other African countries, Ethiopia is home to a beautiful waterfall that will take your breath away. Blue Nile Falls consists of four cascading streams and it’s 52 meters high. It’s also known by the nickname Tis Abay, which can be translated as “great smoke”.
With an average annual temperature of around 35°C, Dallol is often described as the hottest place on the planet. That’s also the reason why it’s one of the most remote places on Earth, but its rusty orange and green salt formations will still leave you speechless.

The staple of Ethiopian food is injera, a spongy type of bread made from the flour of a native plant. This bread is used as the method for picking up food, as the country’s many stews and lentil dishes soak into the injera as you pick it up. Yum!
It can get pretty hot in Ethiopia, which might leave you looking for something cool and refreshing to eat. Azifa is a great option! This cold lentil salad contains green peppers, tomatoes, lemon, and olive oil and is great for sweltering weather.

Ethiopia is a very mountainous country, and one of the most spectacular mountainous regions can be found in this park in northern Ethiopia. The gelada baboon, which only lives in this rocky and craggy area, can often be found roaming freely near hiking trails and represents the natural diversity found in the Simien Mountains.
Another mountainous national park that you should definitely check out in Ethiopia is the Bale Mountains. The craggy, volcanic mountains of the park contrast sharply with the Sanetti Plateau which has been flattened by glaciers. Large mammals such as the Ethiopian wolf abound in this area.
An arid plain dominates the Nechisar National Park, which is sandwiched between Abaya Lake and Chamo Lake. Crocodiles can be found in Chamo Lake’s placid waters, whereas animals such as zebras dominate the dry landscape between the lakes in this natural protected area.

]]>If you want to go back to the true origins of coffee, Ethiopia is the place you have to travel to! Coffee was first discovered and created in the East African country and once you visit, you’ll see how important it is to the culture.
The arabica plant is where coffee comes from was first found in the Kaffa region of Ethiopia, and it was the region from which the word coffee came out of. Researchers say that coffee was first cultivated in the region all the way back in the 9th century, and in modern-day Ethiopia, coffee is served in a very special way.
Similar to Japanese tea ceremonies, in Ethiopia, there are coffee ceremonies. The ceremony is very precise and involves things like roasting the beans in a pan before grinding them and brewing the coffee. There is usually incense present and often people will serve special popcorn with the coffee.
Though you normally have to be personally invited to a coffee ceremony, there are some public ones in the capital city of Addis Ababa like at the coffee shop Alem Bunna, so if you do get to participate in one, don’t pass it up!

]]>While Ethiopia has transformed into a modern country like many others these days, there are still remnants of its ancient civilizations to this day. One primary example is the Obelisk of Axum, one of the most fascinating historical artifacts that can be seen on Earth.
Located in the city of Axum in the city’s northern Tigray Region, the Obelisk of Axum was returned to Ethiopia in 2005 after spending nearly 70 years in Italy after the country took the obelisk to Rome during its colonial occupation of the country.
Now reassembled in its original site, visitors can marvel at a 79-feet-tall obelisk which was erected over 1,5000 years ago during the reign of the Kingdom of Aksum.
Built in the 4th century AD, this obelisk was originally meant to serve as a burial marker for the kings of this kingdom. Indeed, many burial chambers are located underneath where the tower stands, which made it one of the most important sites in this kingdom’s territory.
Carved with intricate patterns resembling windows and containing a semi-circular top, it’s amazing how well this structure has resisted thousands of years of the elements and two cross-continental trips to stand in absolute splendor as it does today.
The obelisk is a must-visit for history lovers taking a trip to Ethiopia. Be sure to check it out!

]]>Let’s take a look at some of the most sublime that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.
Tiya is an archaeological site in central Ethiopia that contains a colossal 36 ancient monuments. The site features megalithic stone structures that were erected by an unknown Ethiopian civilization. The stones have a number of carvings and symbols that are difficult to decipher, the precise meanings of which are unknown.
Seeking to construct a ‘New Jerusalem’, the 12th-century Ethiopian king Lalibela had eleven churches hewn out of mountain rocks. You can enter these churches carved into mountains and even descend into the network of hermit tunnels beneath.
The Simien Mountains offer one of the most spectacular views in the world. Erosion has caused the mountains to form into jagged peaks extending up towards the sky. You can take guided tours and safaris around the park which is home to rare globally threatened species, such as the Gelada baboon, the Walia Ibex, and the Ethiopian Wolf.

One of the coolest attractions in the area is an active volcano that you are able to climb and peer over into a bubbling lava lake. The red fire and intense smoke will make you feel like you are on another planet, and it is one of only 6 lava lakes in the world.
The hot springs and chemical reactions in the geysers combine for a colorful and unique landscape. Lower down is the area of the salt flats where each year the tiny amount of rain causes the upper layer of salt to replenish after the natives harvest giant salt chunks to sell in nearby markets. If you’re lucky you can catch a glimpse of the Afar people, who survive in the hottest habitable place on Earth.

]]>Hikers can choose any amount of time (from 1 day up to 13 or 14 days) but the most popular trek is the 3-4 day trip from Debark to Gich or Chennek Camp and back. This trip includes some incredible views along with reaching an altitude of 3,600 meters, which brings cold and windy nights.
The entrance to the park has a small entry fee, and a local armed “scout” is mandatory due to the ongoing conflict with Eritrea. While these fees are small, you can cut down on them by joining a small group of other hikers doing the same route as you.
Some of the highlights include the Jinbar Waterfall, a fast stream of water flowing over an incredible cliff edge. The viewpoints are some of the best in the world, and the Walia ibex are the native animals that can be seen climbing the cliffs.
No matter how many days you decide to hike, the Semien Mountains will not disappoint!
