You may be visiting Ethiopia for the fascinating history or beautiful landscapes, but you should definitely also be going for the food. Ethiopian cuisine is full of bold flavors and as interesting as her people. Here are 4 dishes you you should make a point to try.

Injera

Every country has a staple food and in Ethiopia that is injera. The thin, spongy bread is made from teff flour and water, and used as a utensil to scoop up other dishes.

Doro Wat

What is doro wat? This spicy chicken stew is often considered the national dish of Ethiopia. It’s made with chicken, onions, garlic, ginger, and a variety of spices. And eaten with injera, of course.

Shiro

Although meat is a big part of Ethiopian cuisine, there is something for the vegetarians too. Shiro is a chickpea or lentil stew that is made using a blend of spices, including berbere and is thickened with flour.

Coffee

You cannot visit the home of coffee and not have a cup. As coffee is such a part of Ethiopian culture, it is often served in a traditional ceremony that involves roasting the beans, grinding them, and brewing them in a clay pot.

Due to its harsh weather conditions, Ethiopia isn’t one of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations, but that’s not stopping it from being home to many natural wonders you can’t find anywhere else—including these three.

Erta Ale

Ethiopia is home to the world’s longest existing lava lake, located on the grounds of the country’s most active volcano—Erta Ale. Often described as the “gateway to hell”, this smoking volcanic terrain is one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, but that’s not stopping local companies from offering tours in the area that include military escort.

Blue Nile Falls

Just like many other African countries, Ethiopia is home to a beautiful waterfall that will take your breath away. Blue Nile Falls consists of four cascading streams and it’s 52 meters high. It’s also known by the nickname Tis Abay, which can be translated as “great smoke”.

Dallol

With an average annual temperature of around 35°C, Dallol is often described as the hottest place on the planet. That’s also the reason why it’s one of the most remote places on Earth, but its rusty orange and green salt formations will still leave you speechless.

Ethiopian food is one of the biggest draws to booking a trip to this east African country. Although it is starting to gain popularity all over the world, there is no place to try some of the country’s special dishes like inside of its own borders. Foodies, if you book a trip to Ethiopia, don’t leave until you have sampled these three dishes!

Tibs

Do you like stir-fries? If so, you will undoubtedly love tibs, which is like an Ethiopian version of this classic Asian dish. Beef or venison are typically used as the base for this dish, which also contains chopped vegetables that are combined with fragrant spices and red wine.

Injera

The staple of Ethiopian food is injera, a spongy type of bread made from the flour of a native plant. This bread is used as the method for picking up food, as the country’s many stews and lentil dishes soak into the injera as you pick it up. Yum!

Azifa

It can get pretty hot in Ethiopia, which might leave you looking for something cool and refreshing to eat. Azifa is a great option! This cold lentil salad contains green peppers, tomatoes, lemon, and olive oil and is great for sweltering weather.

Ethiopia is definitely one of the most fascinating countries in all of Africa. Located at the divergence point of two tectonic plates, the Nubian and the Somai Plates, this country of 105 million people has a rich natural wealth in addition to its incredible history and cultural traits.

If you are looking to escape to nature during your Ethiopian vacation, you should keep these stunning national parks in mind.

Simien Mountains National Park

Ethiopia is a very mountainous country, and one of the most spectacular mountainous regions can be found in this park in northern Ethiopia. The gelada baboon, which only lives in this rocky and craggy area, can often be found roaming freely near hiking trails and represents the natural diversity found in the Simien Mountains.

Bale Mountains National Park

Another mountainous national park that you should definitely check out in Ethiopia is the Bale Mountains. The craggy, volcanic mountains of the park contrast sharply with the Sanetti Plateau which has been flattened by glaciers. Large mammals such as the Ethiopian wolf abound in this area.

Nechisar National Park

An arid plain dominates the Nechisar National Park, which is sandwiched between Abaya Lake and Chamo Lake. Crocodiles can be found in Chamo Lake’s placid waters, whereas animals such as zebras dominate the dry landscape between the lakes in this natural protected area.

As the coronavirus pandemic prevents most of us from traveling the world as we used to, it is time to get creative. We can still get some of those travel feelings from home if we just play our cards right.

A good trick for feeling like you’re traveling is to taste and try cooking food from all over the world. Today, why not sample the delights of Ethiopian cuisine?

Injera

Injera is the base food of Ethiopian cuisine. It is a thin rubbery bread that you use to scoop up the other dishes. It is slightly bitter and sour to the taste if eaten on its own, but complements the fiery curries and sauces beautifully.

Vegetable Curries

Ethiopian cuisine is full of vibrant and colorful vegetable curries. Made from a large variety of vegetables, herbs, and chilis, they will have your taste buds dancing the eskista.

Berbere

Berbere is a spice mix that is made of up to 16 spices such as ginger, fenugreek, chili powder, garlic, cinnamon, and cardamom. It is one of the common dish accompaniments you will find in Ethiopia.

Tef

Tef is the world’s smallest grain and is a staple of the Ethiopian diet. Known as a superfood in the West, it is high in protein, calcium and is gluten-free. Tef is the main ingredient in injera.

If you want to go back to the true origins of coffee, Ethiopia is the place you have to travel to! Coffee was first discovered and created in the East African country and once you visit, you’ll see how important it is to the culture.

The arabica plant is where coffee comes from was first found in the Kaffa region of Ethiopia, and it was the region from which the word coffee came out of. Researchers say that coffee was first cultivated in the region all the way back in the 9th century, and in modern-day Ethiopia, coffee is served in a very special way.

Similar to  Japanese tea ceremonies, in Ethiopia, there are coffee ceremonies.  The ceremony is very precise and involves things like roasting the beans in a pan before grinding them and brewing the coffee. There is usually incense present and often people will serve special popcorn with the coffee.

Though you normally have to be personally invited to a coffee ceremony, there are some public ones in the capital city of Addis Ababa like at the coffee shop Alem Bunna,  so if you do get to participate in one, don’t pass it up!

Ethiopia has a rich history of kingdoms and peoples who have combined over the centuries and millennia to create one of the richest tapestries of human existence in this East African country.

While Ethiopia has transformed into a modern country like many others these days, there are still remnants of its ancient civilizations to this day. One primary example is the Obelisk of Axum, one of the most fascinating historical artifacts that can be seen on Earth.

Located in the city of Axum in the city’s northern Tigray Region, the Obelisk of Axum was returned to Ethiopia in 2005 after spending nearly 70 years in Italy after the country took the obelisk to Rome during its colonial occupation of the country.

Now reassembled in its original site, visitors can marvel at a 79-feet-tall obelisk which was erected over 1,5000 years ago during the reign of the Kingdom of Aksum.

Built in the 4th century AD, this obelisk was originally meant to serve as a burial marker for the kings of this kingdom. Indeed, many burial chambers are located underneath where the tower stands, which made it one of the most important sites in this kingdom’s territory.

Carved with intricate patterns resembling windows and containing a semi-circular top, it’s amazing how well this structure has resisted thousands of years of the elements and two cross-continental trips to stand in absolute splendor as it does today.

The obelisk is a must-visit for history lovers taking a trip to Ethiopia. Be sure to check it out!

Ethiopia has a pretty impressive history. Besides being home to the oldest known human remains, introducing the world to coffee, and being said to possess the ark of the covenant, the country has a great variety of majestically ancient wonders of the world.

Let’s take a look at some of the most sublime that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

Tiya

Tiya is an archaeological site in central Ethiopia that contains a colossal 36 ancient monuments. The site features megalithic stone structures that were erected by an unknown Ethiopian civilization. The stones have a number of carvings and symbols that are difficult to decipher, the precise meanings of which are unknown.

Lalibela Stone Churches

Seeking to construct a ‘New Jerusalem’, the 12th-century Ethiopian king Lalibela had eleven churches hewn out of mountain rocks. You can enter these churches carved into mountains and even descend into the network of hermit tunnels beneath.

Simien Mountains National Park

The Simien Mountains offer one of the most spectacular views in the world. Erosion has caused the mountains to form into jagged peaks extending up towards the sky. You can take guided tours and safaris around the park which is home to rare globally threatened species, such as the Gelada baboon, the Walia Ibex, and the Ethiopian Wolf.

One of the hottest and lowest places on earth, salt flats, a lava lake, and colorful chemical geysers are just some of the things you will see in the Danakil Depression in Northeastern Ethiopia. This unique place, where many natural phenomena come together, is sometimes compared to Mars.

The Danakil Depression is on the list of the top 3 hottest places on earth, and while Death Valley, CA has the highest recorded temperature at 134.5 Fahrenheit (56.7 Celsius), Danakil has the highest average year-round temperature at 94 degrees (34.5 Celsius)!

One of the coolest attractions in the area is an active volcano that you are able to climb and peer over into a bubbling lava lake. The red fire and intense smoke will make you feel like you are on another planet, and it is one of only 6 lava lakes in the world.

The hot springs and chemical reactions in the geysers combine for a colorful and unique landscape. Lower down is the area of the salt flats where each year the tiny amount of rain causes the upper layer of salt to replenish after the natives harvest giant salt chunks to sell in nearby markets. If you’re lucky you can catch a glimpse of the Afar people, who survive in the hottest habitable place on Earth.

The Semien Mountains, located in Northern Ethiopia, have some of the best multi-day hiking trails around. The combination of sheer beauty along with unique plants and animals makes this a top destination for any outdoor lover.

Hikers can choose any amount of time (from 1 day up to 13 or 14 days) but the most popular trek is the 3-4 day trip from Debark to Gich or Chennek Camp and back. This trip includes some incredible views along with reaching an altitude of 3,600 meters, which brings cold and windy nights.

The entrance to the park has a small entry fee, and a local armed “scout” is mandatory due to the ongoing conflict with Eritrea. While these fees are small, you can cut down on them by joining a small group of other hikers doing the same route as you.

Some of the highlights include the Jinbar Waterfall, a fast stream of water flowing over an incredible cliff edge. The viewpoints are some of the best in the world, and the Walia ibex are the native animals that can be seen climbing the cliffs.

No matter how many days you decide to hike, the Semien Mountains will not disappoint!
