‘Tis the season for Christmas markets galore, and when it comes to this holiday pastime, few places do it better than Eastern Europe. Holiday markets throughout the region have an authentic cultural charm not found in cities in other parts of the world, offering visitors the opportunity to shop for handmade gifts and sip mugs of mulled wine against a backdrop of snow-dusted Gothic architecture. Here are a few of our favorites.

Vörösmarty Square, Romania

Budapest’s most famous Christmas market features a unique blend of local tradition and festive charm. With dozens of stalls featuring handmade crafts, cuisine, and a children’s theater, there’s something for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Those looking to learn more about the market and surrounding area can also sign up for guided tours—with stops for mulled wine and cake, of course.

Tallinn Christmas Market, Estonia

Every December, a dusting of snow and a few decorations transform the heart of Tallinn’s medieval Old Town into a winter wonderland. Estonians take Christmas very seriously and are often credited as one of the first groups of people to bring the tradition of displaying trees for the holiday to Europe. In addition to several Christmas trees, the Tallinn market also features crafts, local cuisine, and even a merry-go-round.

Old Town Market Square, Poland

Warsaw is home to several holiday markets, with the annual Old Town market being the largest and most famous. The city’s historic center is a sight to see decorated with lights and an 80-foot Christmas tree, which add an air of celebration to the otherwise quaint and cozy area. Stay warm with a hot cup of spiced wine as you shop for Polish crafts, or grab your skates and hit the rink outside the Palace of Culture.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is considered by many to be one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cities in Northern Europe. Full of medieval castle walls, towering church bell towers, cobblestone streets, and beautiful public squares, there is an endless number of sights to see and enjoy. Here are the ones we most recommend.

Old Town

An obvious place to start your tour of Tallinn is with a tour of the Old Town, which features stunning architecture and locals wearing medieval costumes to help you imagine what the Old Town may have been like when it was well, not “old” yet.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Another common tourist favorite in Tallinn is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which is artful and beautiful on the inside and outside, with mind-blowing architecture on display from every angle. Plus, it has free entrance!

Viru Gates

In order to get into Old Town, you can enter through Viru Gate, which was part of Tallinn’s defense system in the fourteenth century. Not the entire gate remains, but the parts that do are still awe-inspiring. Plus, it is surrounded by market stalls selling roasted nuts, woolen mittens, and other fun goodies.

With so many amazing places to visit in Europe, who has time for Tallinn – the Estonian capital? It’s not too close to any other big European cities – except for Helsinki, and that’s by boat. However, if you enjoy exploring history, art, and architecture, this northern Europe city may have a lot more to offer than you think.

Tallinn is one of the rare European cities that has a well-preserved historical center. It hosts a fortress that was built in 1050 A.D. which is located on a hill in the center of the city. The 14th-century architectural masterpieces are nearby and it’s impressive that they survived centuries of changes, wars, and conquerors.

The architecture of the city was influenced by many different cultures over time. The city is an eclectic mix of Danish, Swedish, and German influences with its historical center being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Epping Tower offers a glimpse into Estonian medieval history. Those who’re more into art can enjoy artworks from the Social Realism current and classics from the 18th century Estonia. All this tells us that Tallinn is a true gem that’s just waiting to be discovered by a horde of tourists.

Everybody loves swings when they’re kid but in Estonia, people decided that swinging shouldn’t be a hobby reserved for the young. Instead, they created ‘kiiking‘ which is the sport of swinging for those who are young at heart and big on thrills.

The aim of the sport is to swing higher and further than anyone else. The arms are made of steel so making the 360 degree full swing which looks temptingly dangerous as a kid, is certainly possible when kiiking.

One of the challenges of the sport is that the longer the arms are, the more difficult it is to gain enough momentum to swing all the way over. Competitors thus adjust the steel arms to the length they would like in order to reach maximum heights.

The sport requires extreme upper arm strength so it is not something anybody can try out. Still, if you are heading to Baltic Europe, you’ll notice more swings in public parks than anywhere else in Europe. You can also rent a kiiking set to give the sport ago yourself.

You can watch a clip of the Estonian extreme sport here:

Sadly, the three small European countries that make up the Baltics – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – are often overlooked due to their small size and relative isolation.

Here is one recommendation for travelers in each one of these Baltic nations:

Estonia: Tallinn, the country’s capital

You might be surprised to learn that Tallinn is a beautiful, cosmopolitan city with a rich history.

The city has been a major hub for merchants and trading in the North Atlantic Ocean since the 14th century. Tallinn’s amazingly well-preserved medieval city center, a UNESCO World Heritage site which dates back to the city’s heyday as a trading hotspot, is home to what was once the world’s tallest building in the 16th and 17th century, St. Olaf’s Church.

Latvia: Gauja National Park

Northern Latvia is the home of this breathtaking national park, which is centered around the Gauja River Valley.

It offers an extensive cavern system, mountains, and exposed sandstone cliffs. This park isn’t only home to natural sites, however, as it also preserves six medieval castles as well as three intact medieval towns: Straupe, Sigulda, and Cesis. What other park offers this kind of natural and cultural variety?

Lithuania: Trakai Island Castle

The southernmost Baltic state is the home to one of the most spectacular castles on Earth, which is known as Trakų salos pilis in Lithuanian.

This castle, which was built in the 13th and 14th centuries, is still intact and accessible today after several renovations and restoration works to preserve its structure. What makes it truly unique is its location, on an island in the middle of Lake Galvė which is only accessible by footbridge.
