Released annually and based on surveys and searches on the popular travel guidance platform, the Tripadvisor Winter Travel Index provides an overview of U.S. travelers’ traveling habits during the winter season. According to the newest data, 57% of Americans intend to travel this winter, while a growing number of them consider it their main vacation season.
Tripadvisor Winter Travel Index also revealed the most popular international and domestic destinations for U.S. travelers for the upcoming winter season.
Most Popular International Winter Destinations for U.S. Travelers
Tripadvisor’s data shows that U.S. travelers prefer exotic international destinations that provide a lot of sunshine. Out of the top 10 places, eight of them are considered beach destinations. The list includes Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Punta Cana and Bavaro in Dominican Republic, Palm-Eagle Beach in Aruba, and San Juan in Puerto Rico.
U.S. citizens are only willing to travel to a non-beach destination during winter if it’s for ultra-popular tourist hotspots like London, U.K., and Paris, France.
Most Popular Domestic Winter Destinations for U.S. Travelers
The list is more diverse when it comes to domestic destinations that U.S. travelers will flock to this winter. New York City, New York, tops the list, followed by entertainment hotspots such as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Orlando, Florida. Two beach destinations in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Key West, Florida, close out the top five.
The list also includes New Orleans, Louisiana; Anaheim, California; Chicago, Illinois; Miami Beach, Florida; and Sedona, Arizona.
