Due to its small size, Serbia is the perfect road trip destination, and you’ll discover many hidden gems if you decide to explore it this way. Abandoned and decaying castles, fortresses, and churches are among them and these three are as haunting as it gets.

Spicer Castle (Beocin)

One of Serbia’s best-hidden secrets, this classic 19th-century castle has been decaying for decades before becoming an Instagram sensation. The remains of its vibrant walls, stained glass windows, and beautifully decorated columns add to its ghost-like quality.

Pinova Vila (Zrenjanin)

Another 19th-century castle that’s currently in the critical state, Pinova Vila is one of the main tourist attractions of Serbian city called Zrenjanin. Inspired by the elements of gothic architecture, the exterior of this castle is reminiscent of its original shape, but it lacks its former glory due to significant damage.

Araca (Novi Becej)

Not truly a castle, but a medieval Romanesque church ruin, Arača is situated close to the small town Novi Bečej in northern Serbia. It’s truly a sight to behold thanks to its countryside setting, and the foundation and remaining walls of the tiny church will make you feel like you traveled centuries back in time.
