Most people go to the beach to soak up the sun, relax, and enjoy water sports. If you’re not a huge fan of these activities, but still want to hit the beach during your holidays, black sand beach Reynisdrangar in Iceland is just the place for you.

This beach is located near the village Vík, and it became a popular tourist attraction after making it to Islands Magazine’s list of the most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world. It also doesn’t hurt its case that it’s easily accessible since it takes about 2.5 hours to reach it from Reykjavik.

The unusual color of the sand isn’t the only thing attracting people to the shores of Reynisdrangar. It’s also known for imposing basalt sea stacks, which stand as a constant reminder of the powerful forces of nature that shaped this beautiful island.

There are many amazing folk tales and legend surrounding these impressive rock formations, but photos you stumbled upon on Instagram aren’t the only reason why they seem familiar. Reynisdrangar was one of the Icelandic filming locations featured on Game of Thrones.
