National Gallery of Australia is One of Canberra’s Must-See Spots

Canberra may be the capital of Australia, but it never gets as much attention as other major cities in the country, such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. That shouldn’t stop you from checking it out and discovering many amazing landmarks it has in store—including the National Gallery of Australia.

With more than 166,000 works of art located inside a contemporary brutalist building that covers 23,000 square meters, this is one of the largest galleries in all of Australia. The magic starts before you even enter the building, in its picture-perfect sculpture garden, and things only get better from that point on.

The National Gallery of Australia is best known for housing a comprehensive collection of Aboriginal art. It also showcases works of many famous Australian non-indigenous artists and features everything from western and eastern art to crafts and photography.

The doors of this gallery are open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day, but it’s important to keep in mind there are safety measures in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to wearing face coverings and keeping social distance, visitors are asked to limit their visits to two hours because there’s a timed entry due to limited capacity.
