While many of us dream of being upgraded to first class, only a few of us have actually had the privilege. Getting an update isn’t all about timing and knowing the right people, surprisingly, it’s about having the right outfit.
Wearing the perfect clothes is the easiest way to get an upgrade to first class, without having to do much. If you’ve been arriving at the airport in sweatpants and sneakers, don’t expect to get an upgrade. You’ll have to put just a bit more effort into your appearance.
A flight attendant told Who What Wear that it’s not all about wearing designer or trendy clothes and that you should be “smart but understated. You should look like you travel often … it helps; someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren’t dressed suitably.”
This doesn’t mean that you can’t still be comfy, but just don’t dress like you’re headed for a workout. When getting dressed, wear something that you would for a casual workday and avoid dirty sneakers, leggings, flip-flops, ratty shirts, and jeans.
