Las Lajas Sanctuary Might Be the Most Beautiful Church on Earth

If you travel to the tiny town of Las Lajas in western Colombia, which you might not even know exists, you will find what many consider to be the most stunningly gorgeous cathedral on the planet.

Las Lajas Sanctuary was built between 1916 and 1949 in what was an arduous and difficult process. The result, however, was worth the 33 years of construction that it took to build.

This church, located just minutes away from the Ecuadorian border, is located inside of the canyon that was formed by the passage of the Guaitara River. Its natural location is beautiful in and of itself, but the walkway to access the building and the church itself are on a whole different level.

A popular pilgrimage site in South America, Las Lajas Sanctuary can only be accessed by a breathtaking bridge which crosses over the canyon.

The sanctuary itself was constructed in the Gothic Revival style, which was inspired by a medieval architecture trend that was hugely popular in Europe. Its light grey slabs are made using slate and shale rock that was sourced from the area.

If you find yourself in Colombia one day, you have to make a trip to the Las Lajas Sanctuary. This really might be the most beautiful church in the world.
