Traveling in Europe, it’s easy to find a hotel with an interesting history. For history buffs, the Erzherzog Rainer Hotel puts its history forward. The hotel not only shares its past with the guests but fills the stay with little periodical nuggets.

Named after the Archduke Rainer Ferdinand of Austria, who had a magnificent mustache, it opened as a family-run hotel in 1913. That’s more than 100 years ago!

The lobby is decorated as a mix between modern comfort and historical intrigue, with artefacts from the hotel’s past.

But the historical touch isn’t only in the hotel’s public spaces. Since their 2019 renovation, the bedrooms are also part of the experience. One wall in each room has a wallpaper replica of the Archduke’s signed authorization for the hotel to be named after him.

Since the renovation, the hotel classic decor may wink at its past, but it is otherwise completely modern. It has an environmentally-friendly air-conditioning, comfy beds, and a traditional Viennese restaurant on the ground floor.

At the end of your time in Vienna it may just feel like your hotel was more than simply a place to stay, it was part of the story of your Viennese experience.
