Palma de Mallorca is one of the jewels of Spain; located off the coast of the mainland, this Balearic Island is popular with people from all over the world, especially those from Northern Europe and Great Britain. This holiday destination is bursting at the seams in the summer but remains a much warmer climate compared to most of the world even in the winter season which makes it desirable throughout the year. Palma de Mallorca’s topography pleases hikers, city slickers, and beach bums alike. Palma de Mallorca delivers a little bit of everything for everyone.

What To Do:

Take A Hike:

There are ruins all over the island, especially outside of the capital city of Palma. The major mountain range that surrounds Palma is the Serra De Tramuntana, which can be seen from even within the city limits.  If you’d like to venture outside of Palma, take a bus or trains to one of the smaller towns and you will see much to explore.

Valldemossa is a town which is home to a monastery called Ermita de la Trinita. Originally built as a palace, it was turned into a monastery at the end of the 14th century. This monastery has the most incredible views of the sea, and it feels as if you are in the middle of the world. Getting there requires a bit of hiking from the bus stop, but the views are more than sunset. Watching the sunset from Ermita de la Trinita is an indescribable experience, and you will not want to let when the sun finally goes down.

The Mediterranean Sea:

The beauty of the mediterranean sea is unmistakable in Palma de Mallorca. Lounging and reading a book by the sea is enough to fill a vacation, but there is so much more beyond that. Near the town of Manacor is a small town called Porto Cristo. This town has beaches beyond your wildest dreams, and great walking and hiking paths as well. Walk along the beach and cliffs that surround the town for breathtaking views your friends at home will not believe.

Where to Eat:

Because of its location on the Mediterranean, Palma de Mallorca’s seafood is fresh and divine. A different way to experience this fresh cuisine is by going to Centro Comercial S`Escorxador, Palma’s mercado. This open market is full of vendors serving artisanal dishes from Spain to Italy to Thailand. But what makes this market truly special is the variety of raw seafood that is cooked before your very eyes. You can choose anything from large shrimp to octopus and watch get grilled simply to perfection.

If you’re strolling along the sea in Palma, a must try restaurant is Cafe La Lonja. This restaurant has traditional Spanish dishes like tortilla and grilled padron peppers, but also have delicious cheese boards and Spanish olives. With almost all of the seating outdoors, even in the winter, you can enjoy the views of a gorgeous gothic church and a sliver of the port while enjoying a fantastic meal.
