For those of us who have had the opportunity to go on a backpacking trip, it is well known that keeping your belongings safe can be a complex task at times.

The rain, the hot sun, confusion, or just a tendency to forget things, can cost us a lot of money and loss of equipment we need for the rest of the trip.

To avoid frustration, and to keep your belongings safe, here’s what you need to do.

When going on a backpacking trip, it is important not to take more than you need. If you have a particularly beloved book, you may want to leave it at home, as there is a danger that it will be damaged on the trip.

Try making a list of your equipment, and each time you pack, check that you have indeed taken with you everything on the list.

Do not hesitate to take precautions to prevent equipment theft, especially when staying in hostels or dormitories. A lock on the bag and a money belt can prevent great heartache.

Keep your passport close to you at all times. The danger of losing a passport at such times, when not all embassies are open, can be great.
