When you’re visiting a new city, you often want to strike a balance between seeing the top tourist sites, and experiencing the place as a local. The touristy areas are often overcrowded and overpriced, so getting to see the city like a local can lead to a more authentic, engaging experience. Check out these tips on how to explore any city like a local.

Walk

Unless you’re trying to get between two points in the city that are simply miles apart, walk around so that you get the feel of the streets. Walking also enables you to stop and take it all in, and if you see a shop, cafe or gallery that looks interesting, you can just pop in!

Sign Up for a Local’s Tour

Most major cities offer tours run by local people, who can design their tours to take in some of the major sites as well as some of the best-kept secrets of the city. Tag along on one of these tours, and you’ll learn loads about how the people who live in the city take pride in the place they live and enjoy its facilities.

Dine Away From the Crowd

More often than not, the cafes and restaurants situated right beside the tourist traps will be overpriced. Often, the food they serve is not particularly authentic, either. As you walk around, try and spot some promising independent places where you could get dinner or a cup of coffee. Eating at restaurants tucked away down side streets often means you get a better meal and overall experience.
