A new survey by Kayak showed that holiday travel in the U.S. will probably be cheaper and more last-minute this year. Kayak is a travel search site and they believe that many people in America will travel this holiday, but most of the flights aren’t booked yet.

According to them, domestic flight searches are down 81% compared to the same time last year. Similarly, hotel searches are down 74%. The COVID-19 pandemic made travel uncertain so many people aren’t making plans upfront. Spontaneous trips will be the biggest trend once the December holidays come.

Kayak’s data also suggests that people will take short getaways instead of long trips more often. More people are searching for alternative accommodation types like cottages and cabins than they did in 2019.

“We believe Americans will travel this holiday season, it will just look different,” CEO of Kayak Steve Hafner says. “Expect domestic instead of international travel, longer trip lengths and last-minute decisions. For those who feel comfortable flying and are flexible on routes and dates, there are deals to be had.”
