Here are Some Incredible Walks Along the River Shannon in Ireland

Ireland is an amazing country to visit. Located in Europe, this small island is a haven of luscious green landscapes, impressive mountains, a wild coastline, and exciting cultures and traditions. It’s a super popular place for walking and hiking, with so many stunning areas to explore. The River Shannon is the largest river in Ireland and dotted along it are some wonderful spots to stretch your legs. If you’re planning a trip to this glorious country, here are some incredible walks along this lovely river.

East Clare Way, Clare

This epic circular route is over 110 miles long, but you can of course choose to do whichever sections of it you want. It takes in lovely forests, rugged hills, and sweet villages, and winds close to the Shannon at various points. It also takes you near Lough Derg, a stunning lake which the river flows into. 

Old Rail Trail, Westmeath

This route is just under 25 miles long and follows an old section of the Midlands Great Western Railway. It starts in Athlone and follows the River Shannon’s journey to the Royal Canal in Mullingar. Winding through idyllic countryside and passing under old bridges, this route can transport you back in time and leave you feeling peaceful and revived from the glorious nature around you.
