Charleston is known for its pastel antebellum style houses. These houses hold so much history from the outside and on the inside. A great way to get a history lesson while admiring the truly spectacular architecture is by going on a walking house tour. Many important politicians and writers have resided in Charleston, and going on a walking tour allows your experience to be as fulfilling as it can be.

However, if you are looking to save on money, simply walk around the many beautiful neighborhoods of downtown and enjoy. No matter what, you have to see Rainbow Row, which is the largest row of Georgian style homes in the US.

One area you have to hit is the Battery. This area of the city is famous for being a defensive seawall during the Civil War as well as having some out-of-this-world homes. Take a walk in this area and enjoy the views of the water and many sculptures that are scattered throughout.

If you want to see grandiose plantation-style architecture, go over to the campus of the College of Charleston. This university was built in 1770, making it one of the oldest institutions in the country. The campus is lined with Spanish moss trees, buildings with huge white pillars, and cobblestone walkways. The campus is also famous for being the site of the movie The Notebook, so go on over and see it for yourself!

Beaches

There are many beaches just outside the city, and they are all truly beautiful. Folly Beach is one of the closest beaches to the city, but it does tend to get more crowded. If you are willing to drive a bit further, Sullivan’s Island is a beautiful getaway and very romantic. Isle of Palms is also wonderful and very kid friendly.

Where To Eat

The food in Charleston is really unique and very much different that what you would find in the rest of the country. Known as Lowcountry food, this type of cuisine focuses on local ingredients and utilizing the sea for inspiration. The restaurant FIG has classic southern cuisine with a sophisticated twist, perfect for experiencing really elegant southern food. One dessert you have to try above all is a praline. A praline is a sugary nut treat that Charleston is famous for. You can find them in most shops in the city and you will be instantly addicted once you have one.
