The Star Wars films may take place in a galaxy far, far away, but not all of their futuristic locations were brought to life by green screens. Many unusual spots around the world served as sets for this hit sci-fi franchise, and the Tunisian city of Tozeur is one of the best possible examples.

If you know Star Wars: The Phantom Menace by heart, you’ll immediately notice that Tozeur resembles the fictional planet Tatooine and the spaceport of Mos Espa. That’s because the set for this movie was built near Tozeur, and its leftovers are still around, in the middle of the desert, attracting people from all around the world.

Tozeur actually isn’t the only place you should check out if you’re a Star Wars lover visiting Tunisia. Several movies from the popular franchise were filmed in this African country, and abandoned locations can now be found all across the country.

There are even guided tours from Tozeur that offer you the opportunity to explore several filming locations at once. To make the whole thing even better, Star Wars movies weren’t the only ones filmed in Tozeur—this city also served as a backdrop for Raiders of the Lost Ark and The English Patient.
