When someone says they’re going on a trip, we usually imagine them going to some popular place, with a lot of people, interesting places and mesmerizing landscapes. But lately, ghost towns seem to have become very popular.

Ghost towns are usually abandoned towns or towns with very few people that live there. They can be creepy but there’s something inexplicable that simply draws people there.

Pripyat, Ukraine

The most popular ghost city in the world at the moment. This town was a nuclear city in the Soviet Union and supported the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The city had a population of 49,360 and was abandoned on April 27, 1986, after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Hashima Island, Japan

an isolated island located 15 kilometers from Nagasaki. This island used to have coal mines and in 1959, there were 5,259 residents living there. But, with lowering the coal reserves, the mines were closing so everyone eventually left the island. Hashima is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Craco, Italy

This historic place dates back to 540 BC. The plague played a part in the downfall of this city, but it was completely abandoned because of an earthquake in 1980.
