Lisbon, Portugal is one of the most magical places in Europe. What To Do

Lisbon is situated on the Tagus River and is beautiful to sit by and relax. Walking to the river you will find small gardens, and plenty of overlooks onto the many red-tiled roofs.

Lisbon’s rich history has left behind beautiful castles and cathedrals to enjoy. The Sao Jorge Castle is famous for its Moorish history. It overlooks the entire city of Lisbon as well as the Tagus River. Take a walk along the property and make sure to enjoy the views this landmark provides.

Part of enjoying a city is learning the history, and there is no better way than through art. The National Museum of Contemporary Art showcases many Portuguese artists, as well as foreign works. This museum has an extensive collection of Portuguese paintings from the Romanticism, Naturalism, and Modern periods of art.

Where and What To Eat

The restaurant scene in Lisbon ranges from Southeast Asian to traditional Portuguese food, and everything in between. But, when in Lisbon, there are a few classic dishes you cannot leave without trying.

A francesinha is a Portuguese sandwich that resembles a bacon cheeseburger but is completely covered in a tomato broth and eaten with a fork and knife. This dish is the ultimate meat lovers dream and can be found at most establishments around the city.

Pastel de nata are one of the most famous Portuguese sweets and for good reason. Pastel de nata are custard tarts that essentially are mini creme-brulees to go. These treats are generally served with cinnamon and powdered sugar, the perfect accompaniment to this rich, creamy classic.

When you go to Lisbon, the best place to get pastel de nata is the famous Pasteis de Belém. This bakery is just outside the city limits but is well worth the trip. Make sure you buy enough to last your whole trip, you’re going to crave these as soon as you try one!

If you are lucky enough to end up in Lisbon around the holidays, there is one special treat you simply must try; sonhos. Sonhos, or dreams in English, are a donut-like pastry made from dough similar to choux pastry. Unfortunately, these dreams are only available around Christmas, so make trying them high on your list!

Where To Go Out

The Bairro Alto neighborhood of Lisbon has more than 100 bars and restaurants. Not only is there selection, but the quality of food all over the city is very high, while the price of food and alcohol is relatively low. If you are looking for the best nightclubs, Cais do Sodré. Lux and Ouriço are known to be the best for music, dancing, and high profile patrons.
