The city of Birmingham is actually the second largest city in England and the whole of the United Kingdom, after London. This city has a history of ancient civilizations but is currently a thriving metropolis for those living in the West Midlands region. Although London is normally the number one spot to hit when traveling through the country, check out what Birmingham has to offer and you’ll be surprised you hadn’t been there sooner.

Right in the city center is Birmingham’s Museum Art and Gallery. This museum is housed in a gorgeous building, so you’ll have to make sure to focus on the art and not get swept up by the amazing architecture inside. What’s best about this museum is that it’s free. A fun museum for kids and adults alike is the science museum called the Thinktank. This award-winning museum has four floors of hands-on activities, a science garden, and even a planetarium. There is absolutely something for everyone at Thinktank, so don’t miss out!
Cadbury World is another destination you must experience while in Birmingham. The famous chocolate company got their start in the city, and you can go visit the premises and see how everything is done! Take a tour of the factory and come out with more chocolate than you probably know what to do with. This activity is perfect for families or just those who love sweets.
Aston Hall is a gorgeous 17th-century mansion in the Jacobean style. Take a tour inside and get a glimpse of life for the wealthiest members of Birmingham society. The grounds are also sprawling with gardens that will surprise and amaze you.

If you are looking to wind down a bit during your stay, see a movie at the famous moviehouse, The Electric. This cinema is more than 100 years old making it the oldest cinema in the UK. Not only is it a history lesson, but it’s also fun for everyone.
Soccer
If you’re in Birmingham, you have to catch a football match, which is how the English say soccer. Standing at more than a century old, St. Andrew’s stadium is home to the Birmingham City Football Club, which has been around even longer than the stadium. Going to a game is not only a fun experience for a family but a great way to meet locals as well.
Restaurants
Birmingham has every type of food you’re looking for. If you are craving some classic fish and chips, you must go to Dad’s Lane Fish Bar, which is one of the best in the city. If you are looking for something more upscale, try Adam’s restaurant, a twist on classic English cuisine done in a sophisticated manner.
Nightlife
Birmingham is known for its amazing club and pub scene. There are also several gay bars and clubs that are a great time with even better music. Check out the Nightingale for good club experience, and the Village Inn if you’re looking for something lively during the week.
