Iceland became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world several years ago thanks to the availability of cheap layover flights. Although the layover program has since been dismantled, Iceland is still a great place to visit. Here are some good spots.

Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the best place to visit to experience the cultural sites and to reach the rest of the country. It has the most resources for tourists and it’s small enough to walk around to local sites, including the main church and the Icelandic punk museum. There are many nice hostels, such as the Kex hostel, where you can meet other travelers.

Vik

There are many places across Iceland to view the famed Northern Lights, but one of the best is a small village called Vik. From Vik, you can reach the black sand beaches, one of the best places to see the lights. Vik has the charm of a smaller town, but still has a number of great hotels and hostels.

Egilsstaðir

Egilsstaðir is the place to stay if you want to be out in nature. As a small town out in the fjords, there are fewer available hotels but the beautiful views are worth it. This is a great town for those who like to leave urban life behind.
