The minister of South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment Barbara Creecy did a review of the country’s policies revolving around wildlife in October of 2019. The panel she formed has made some new rules and they include a ban on the captive breeding of lions, letting tourists interact with them, and selling lion parts.

On May 2nd, 2021, the minister shared a statement in which she announced that the captive lion industry “did not contribute to conservation and was doing damage to South Africa’s conservation and tourism reputation.” It’s now up to the parliament to turn the decision into law and it’s likely that will happen.

Captive lions around the world often live in inhumane conditions without proper care and nutrition. According to National Geographic, there are around 2,000 wild lions in South Africa and 6,000-8,000 lions in captivity in the country.

Many tourists find it exciting to feed and pet lion cubs, but what looks cute on the outside comes with a big price. When the cubs grow up, they are often sold and killed. These practices are now being banned. The new law “will result in both protection and enhancement of South Africa’s international reputation, repositioning the country as an even more competitive destination of choice for ecotourism and responsible hunting,” as Creecy says.

The State of Hawaii recently declared a “climate emergency,” a resolution that will guide the state’s officials to consider climate impact whenever a big national decision is made. The measure (SCR44) ensures “climate mitigation and adaptation efforts mobilize at the necessary scale and speed.”

Hawaii is a popular tourist destination with around 10 million visitors on a yearly basis. Tourism is a huge part of the state’s economy and the new bill could slightly alter the experience of tourists.

The first two out of four action points make sure to protect the locals as much as possible. “People locally and around the world have the right to clean, healthy, and adequate air, water, land, food, education, and shelter,” states one part of the resolution.

The next two points focus on tourism. A shift to electric vehicles available for rent will reduce gas emissions, and when it comes to locals, there are plans to open many new jobs in the renewable energy field.

Sustainable travel has been trending for a while, but without initiatives like this, there’s not a lot that individuals can do to make the situation better. Hawaii is setting a great example for others so we expect to see more similar initiatives in the future.

Once you get to Iceland, you’ll find it difficult to stay in one place. There’s no need to, as the country is perfect for long road trips where you can discover beautiful waterfalls, volcanic craters, and glaciers. Depending on where you live, you may see some incredible natural wonders you’ve never seen before, and they are located a short drive from each other. Here are three remote villages that may not be on your radar but are definitely worth making a detour when you’re exploring the country.

Hvammstangi

Gorgeous landscapes will make you fall in love with Hvammstangi, a 19th-century trading post that you can reach after a scenic drive along the country’s northern coast. The Icelandic Seal Center has exhibitions on all kinds of seals that live in the North Atlantic and Arctic region. You can hop on a boat tour to see them.

Hólmavík

With only around 400 residents, Hólmavík has an interesting history that connects it to witchcraft. The Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft is a great place to get an insight into the history of witchcraft in Iceland.

Stykkishólmur

The beautiful village was the filming location for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Greenland in the movie). You can reach it from Reykjavik by car, and you’ll be there in two hours so it’s perfect for a day trip.

We always see traveling as something exciting and positive, but just like everything else in life, it has a negative side as well. Thinking about the ways to stay safe while traveling is important if you want to stay out of trouble and be able to completely relax, especially if you’re traveling alone. Here are some of our best travel safety tips.

Carry a Backup Card

In case your wallet gets stolen, having a backup card you can use at the ATMs can be a lifesaver. Store it separately, like in your suitcase, for example. Do everything you can to prevent your wallet from being stolen in the first place, but in case it happens, it’s good to have a backup.

Keep Your Valuables On You

You probably won’t pack expensive jewelry and similar valuables for the trip, but think about the technology you’re carrying. Chances are, your phone, laptop, and camera equipment are easily worth a few thousand dollars and it’s important to keep them with you at all times. This also includes your money, passport, medications if you’re taking any, and many more.

Do the Research

Traveling to a new destination and discovering it along the way is a romantic idea, but thorough research before you go can make all the difference. Mark the unsafe areas and make sure to avoid them and prepare for any common scams that may turn up at your destination.

Japan is an exciting country due to it’s incredibly rich history and culture. It’s known for its mixture of traditional and modern, with amazing nature and delicious food completing the effect. Here are some interesting facts about Japan you probably didn’t know.

Most Populated City

With 38 million people, Tokyo is the most populated metropolitan area in the world. This includes the city and the area around it, with the city itself having over 9 million people living in it.

Most Vending Machines

There is a vending machine for everything in Japan. In fact, there are around 5.5 million of them – that’s one for 50 people. What can you buy from those vending machines? Pretty much everything, from food and drinks to books, clothes, umbrellas, and many other things you’d never think of.

No Shoes Rule

In Japan, it’s seen as rude to wear shoes inside. Nobody wants to get dirt from the outside with shoes, and it’s common to see an area at the entrance that’s devoted to taking off the shoes. You can take off the shoes there and leave them facing the front door. The host will often give you slippers you can wear while you’re inside.

When it comes to choosing travel destinations, do you tend to go with popular places or explore the more off-the-beaten-track ones? For anyone looking to plan their next exotic adventure, these are some of the least explored remote destinations that can give you a unique traveling experience.

Puglia, Italy

With so many exciting cities and towns to see, people who travel to Italy rarely remember Puglia, located at the heel of the peninsula. The rural landscapes and a mixture of cultural influences from Greece, Spain, and Byzanty make this region unique and worth checking out.

Ladakh, India

Ladakh is a region in northern India and one of the few truly untouched places on our planet. It consists of four mountain ranges, The Great Himalaya, The Ladakh, The Karakoram, and The Zanskar, and offers incredible views at every step. Travelers can stay in beautiful houses in the villages. The experience is unlike anything else!

Faroe Islands, Denmark

If you want to explore the untouched nature of northern Europe, Faroe Islands are the place to go. They belong to Denmark but sit between Norway and Iceland, and they consist of gorgeous coastlines. There are two Michelin-star restaurants where you can try the unique local cuisine.

Japan is famous for futuristic architecture that perfectly blends with the country’s tradition. Old and new constantly mix all around and the impressive new museum Kadokawa Culture Museum, which opened in 2020 is an amazing example. The building was s designed by Kengo Kuma and it’s one of the most amazing projects that ever opened in Tokyo.

The museum’s building is a part of a bigger project called Tokorozawa Sakura Town, which includes an anime-theme hotel, a bookstore, and a big space for various events. The museum has five floors and inside are a library, an anime museum, a shop, and a cafe.

This is currently the main attraction at Sakura Town in Tokyo. The building’s facade was made with massive granite and you can’t miss it when you’re in the neighborhood. The library inside is also a theater space, with 500,000 books and numerous screens supporting that secondary function.

“Although the world and Japan today are struggling with the effects of a permeating, invisible power, we are all trying to fight back and establish a new outlook on the future of humanity,” says Seigow Matsuoka, director of the museum. He welcomes locals and travelers to visit Kadokawa Culture Museum, a place that turns the invisible into the visible.
