The coronavirus pandemic definitely made us more aware of sanitation and the presence of germs on different surfaces. While most experts agree that the risk of Covid-19 exposure on planes is relatively low due to air filtration systems, many have cautioned spending time in airports carries more risk. Here are some of the germiest spots at airports.

Chair Armrests

One of the sites that are most frequently touched but not routinely cleaned is the armrests on chairs in the terminal waiting areas. Consider wiping down the armrests with a sanitary wipe if you’d like to sit down, and avoid sitting on the floor, as it’s even dirtier.

Handrails

Handrails are another high-touch area that is infrequently cleaned. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t touch them, but be mindful, and remember to wash your hands afterward. It’s best to carry hand sanitizer for times when you don’t have access to soap and water.

Security Bins

A 2018 study found that the plastic trays and bins in the security area pose “the highest potential risk” in terms of the presence of viruses in the airport. Some airports started to implement new security bin technologies to ensure a cleaner experience, but there is still a long way to go.

Touch Screens

The self-check-in monitors are probably one of the dirtiest spots in an airport. They are cleaned rarely if ever, so make sure to use sanitizer after touching them.
