Slovakia is a country located in central Europe and is situated between five countries: Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, and Ukraine. Its location means its cuisine is quite unique as it is influenced by both the Hungarian and Austrian cuisine. These are the foods you need to try while in Slovakia.

Goulash Soup

Yes, goulash is a traditional Hungarian food, but the Slovaks have their own version, as well. The Slovakian goulash is usually made of beef, onions, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, garlic and a spice mixture. It is often cooked outside in a cauldron and it is very popular at sporting events.

Potato Pancakes

Potato pancakes are crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside. They are usually served warm with sour cream, kefir or soured milk, and are a great afterschool snack.

Cabbage Soup

As its name says it is a soup made of sauerkraut mixed into a creamy base with boiled potatoes, mushrooms, chopped ham, paprika, black pepper, and garlic. It is a traditional Christmas food, but it can also be enjoyed all year round as an appetizer. It is served warm, with a freshly baked bread.
