If you’re planning a European tour, don’t forget about the stunning mountain ranges spread across the continent. While many people head straight for the ancient cities and beautiful beaches, Europe boasts some truly amazing mountain ranges, with activities running from skiing, hiking, wildlife watching, white water rafting to good old hiking. If you’re an adventurous soul in search of some fantastic outdoor pursuits, make sure to check out at least one of these great European peaks.

Mount Olympus, Greece

If you know anything about Greek myth, you’ll know that this was the peak on which the ancient Greeks believed the gods had their homes. Surrounded by beautiful pine forests, this mountain still feels mysterious and powerful today, but unlike some of the more challenging climbs in the Alps or Dolomites, Mount Olympus is a relatively easy climb (although the final section can get technical). If you prefer to just admire the views from afar, the mountain is set within the Mount Olympus National Park, where there are plenty of relaxing trails.

Ben Nevis, Scotland

This rugged peak in the Glen Coe National Park is relatively simple to climb, but if you don’t fancy the hike there is always the mountain gondola which provides stunning views over the Ben Nevis range. If you plan to tackle this mountain in fall or winter, make sure you’re experienced and well equipped, as challenging weather can make this mountain dangerous.

Wildspitze, Austria

The fourth highest mountain in the Alpine range, the hike up can get very challenging and should only be attempted by experienced climbers. However, walks in the foothills of this mountain can be sublime, especially in spring and summer when the mountain flowers are blooming.
