Did you know that the world’s three tallest statues can be found in Asia? China, Japan, and Myanmar are the homes to the humongous figures dedicated to Buddha. However, comparing to the two most popular ones, The Statue of Liberty and The Statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, which are significantly smaller, it is surprising how unknown these statues are for the public.

Spring Temple Buddha

Spring Temple Buddha with its height of 128 meters (420 ft) holds the record as the world’s tallest statue. It is located in Zhaocun township of Lushan County, Henan, China. It stands on a lotus throne, and beneath the statue there’s a Buddhist monastery. The construction of The Spring Temple Buddha, which got its name from the nearby Tianrui hot spring, lasted 11 years, from 1997 to 2008.

 The Laykyun Sekkya Buddha

In the village of Khatakan Taung, in Myanmar stands the second largest statue in the world. Its construction began in 1996 and it was completed 8 years later, in February 2008. The statue of Gautama Buddha is 116 meters (381 ft) tall and it stands on a 13,5 meter (44 ft) throne.

Ushiku Daibutsu

The Ushiku Daibutsu statue was completed in 1993. It is located in Ushiku, Japan and it is a total of 120 meters (390 ft) tall. Inside the statue, there is a four-story building: Infinite Light and Infinite Life, World of Gratitude and Thankfulness, World of the Lotus Sanctuary and the Room of Mt. Grdhrakuta from where you can have a look from the Buddha’s chest onto the flower garden and the small animal park.
