Sam Elliott is well-known as one of the most successful and critically acclaimed actors of his generation. Though he has shied away from courting fame and media attention, that hasn’t stopped him from starring in some of the most popular movies in history over the course of his 53-year career.
But it’s not just his iconic smooth voice and bushy moustache that’s made Elliott a bona fide national treasure. The true reason behind his success is the strength he has taken from the ups and downs of his personal life—and a great love behind the scenes.

Let’s take a look back at the incredible true story that made Sam Elliott the hero he is today.
A Star is Born
Sam Elliott was born Samuel Pack Elliott on August 9, 1944, in Sacramento, California. His father, Henry Nelson Elliott, had the unusual job of predator control specialist for the Department of the Interior. His mother, Glynn Mamie Sparks, was a sports trainer, both as a high school teacher and a professional trainer.
When Elliott was 13 years old, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where he enrolled in high school.

Little did they know that the bright lights of Hollywood would soon be calling this future star back to California.
School Days
Sam Elliott’s teenage years were spent in Portland, where he attended David Douglas High School. After graduating in 1962, he enrolled at the University of Oregon to study English and Psychology.
However, he dropped out after only two semesters, knowing that his destiny lay outside of traditional schooling.
He then attended Clark College in Vancouver, where he could combine his studies with his true passion—acting.

At Clark College, he starred in the school’s production of Guys and Dolls, receiving rave reviews and commendations to go into acting professionally.
Finding His Voice
From an early age, Sam Elliott stood out among his peers and family members. Even as a young child, it was clear that he had a certain charisma and star quality.
One of the key features of this was his incredibly distinctive voice—a deep and melodious drawl that would come to be one of his signature elements of his work as an actor.

However, no one had any idea just how iconic this deep voice would one day become—and what Elliott would have to overcome on his way to stardom.
Destiny Awaits
Even though the young Sam Elliott knew that his true passion lay in acting and performing, this career choice was not met with approval from his parents. His father, in particular, wanted him to continue with his studies, and forget about what he regarded as a Hollywood pipe dream.
"He gave me that proverbial line, 'You've got a snowball's chance in hell of having a career in (Hollywood),'" Elliott said to AARP Magazine.

So even though he knew where his true passion lay, Elliott continued with his studies—but little did he know that he couldn’t resist his destiny forever.
Tragedy Strikes
But when Elliott was only 18 years old, he and his family suffered a sudden and terrible tragedy. His beloved father, who had instilled in him a strong sense of morals and work ethic, passed away suddenly from a heart attack.
Elliott was torn—he knew that his father wanted him to continue his studies, but he also knew that there was only one way to make a true success of himself and honor his memory.

"He was a realist, my dad. He was a hard worker,” Elliott said. “He had a work ethic that I’ve fashioned mine after, and I thank him for that every day."
The Right Path
After recovering from the shock and heartbreak of losing his father, Sam Elliott knew that he had to honor his memory in the best way possible—by following his dreams and making a true success of his acting career.
Even though his father had not wanted him to go into showbiz, Elliott knew that he could make it work, and just hoped that his father would be looking down proudly eventually.

“He died thinking, ‘Man, this kid is going to go down the wrong path,’” he said in an interview. “And I think on some level that was either hard on me or made me more focused in my resolve to have a career.”
