Can’t Buy Me Love: The Most Expensive Celebrity Separation Settlements

When you exchange "I Dos" with your significant other, the last thing you’re thinking about is the money that you’ll be splitting if and when your marriage ends. And while they say that money can’t buy you love or happiness, these couples just might disagree.

From the richest man in the world to ‘90s pop stars, here are some of the most expensive and high-profile separation settlements of our time. Can you guess the biggest payouts?

Most of us remember her as one of Disney Channel’s most precious little child stars, Hilary Duff rose to fame during her time as the lead in Lizzie McGuire from 2001-2004. More recently she starred in TV series Younger.

Unfortunately, the sweet Houston native didn’t seem to find her happily ever after during her first marriage with former NHL player, Mike Comrie, as they split in 2016. Even though they signed a prenup in 2010, US Weekly shared that she ended up paying an additional $2.5 million in the settlement.

Back in 2000, Shannon and David Beador exchanged their “I Dos” and tied the knot. But it wasn’t until over a decade later in 2014 that the world would really learn about the high-profile couple’s relationship. The two joined The Real Housewives of Orange County for the show’s ninth season and had some touching moments to share on screen. Unfortunately, the two split up a few years later in 2017. The settlement required David to pay Shannon $1.4 million for the divorce, according to People, and another $10,000/month for child support

Falling in love and staying married isn’t as easy as they make it seem in the movies, and both Amber Heard and Johnny Depp know just how true that is. The two actors fell in love and got married in 2015, but ended their romance in 2017.

They shared with People that, their marriage was “intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.” The divorce settlement totaled out to a whopping $7 million dollars, which Heard ended up donating to charity.

After 22 years of marriage, in 2019 British actor Colin Firth and Italian movie producer Livia Giuggioli declared that it was time to end their love story.

The two of them had been through thick and through thin, but at the end of it all, Australia’s Vogue shared that the two had settled on a payout of $62,191 Australian dollars per month of marriage, which totals out to about $12 million U.S. dollars.

One of the most famous former professional racecar drivers, NASCAR announcer Jeff Gordon, and ex-wife, American model Brooke Sealey, fell in love and decided to seal the deal and tie the knot back in 1994.

The two were together for eight years before going their separate ways and splitting up in 2003. At the end of it all, the former Indy 500 champ ended up paying his ex-wife $15 million in their divorce settlement, according to E! news.

The magnificent J. Lo has opened her heart to love, and in the early 2000s, she fell in love with American actor and choreographer, Cris Judd.

In 2001, the two lovebirds exchanged their “I Dos” and danced the night away at their wedding. However, their romance was short-lived, and the two split up in 2003, and agreed to a settlement of a little over $800,000 per month of marriage, totaling to about $19,000,000, according to Daily Mail.
