The U.S. has some incredibly varied landscapes, boasting arid deserts as well as glaciers, in addition to deep canyons and steep mountains. With 50 states to choose from, travelers are spoilt for choice when it comes to the spectacular American outdoors. Here are three of the best U.S. states to visit if you love the great outdoors.

Colorado

Colorado is one of the most mountainous states in the U.S., with over 50 peaks above 14,000 feet. Located in the mid-west of the U.S., Colorado contains Rocky Mountain National Park, which has some of the most stunning mountains in the world and attracts over 4 million visitors each year. Skiing is also a popular winter activity in Colorado, and the town of Aspen is a very popular destination for skiers.

California

California is the second largest state in the U.S., and it contains an enormous range of landscapes including the desert of Death Valley National Park and several national forests. Yosemite National Park has some amazing mountains and rock formations as well as vast woodlands and waterfalls.

Alaska

Alaska is a vast wilderness in the northwest corner of Northern America. It has the tallest mountain in North America (Denali at over 16,000 feet), some awe-inspiring glaciers, and a huge range of wild animals including grizzly bears, bald eagles, and giant moose. Alaska is however one of the most remote states in the U.S., and definitely not for the faint-hearted!
