Most people visit Zanzibar for its beautiful, sun-kissed beaches, but there’s more to this African archipelago than meets the eye. Nature lovers and fans of eco-tourism will feel right at home during their visit, especially if they decide to check out the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre.

Located in close proximity to the Jozani National Park, in the small village of Pete, this popular tourist attraction is home to an impressive live display of Tanzanian butterflies. They are raised in collaboration with around 40 local farmers residing in Pete, providing extra income for the impoverished communities and promoting conservation along the way.

Guided tours at the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre are a pretty unique experience. They offer the opportunity to learn more about the life stages of a butterfly, get a new understanding of the importance of the conservation of the tropical forest, and see many butterflies flying around—or even have them land on your hand if you’re lucky enough.

Zanzibar’s Butterfly Centre is open to visitors every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it’s especially popular with families. The general admission fee is set at $6, while kids pay half the price, and the largest part of the proceeds directly supports the farmers who are making this project possible.

Stone Town also known as Mij Mkongwe, which is Swahili for “Old Town”, is the oldest part of Zanzibar City, Tanzania. The city was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and it’s known for its cultural heritage of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements. Here are five things to do while visiting the historic town.

Forodhani Gardens

The small park, found on the coast of the Indian Ocean, sits across the street from some of the town’s most famous buildings like the Arab Fort, the House of Wonders, and the Palace Museum. Each night, a food market takes place in the garden where you can sample Swahili and Zanzibari cuisine.

Darajani Bazaar

The main bazaar of the city sells groceries, meats, fish, produce, spices, and crafts. Here you’ll find souvenirs and you’ll have a really authentic East African market experience.

The Old Dispensary

Built during colonial times, this four story building has served as a charitable institution and apartments before it fell into a state of despair during the revolution. Since then, it’s been restored and it a respected cultural spot that has restaurants, shops, and offices.

Changuu Island

Also known as “Prison Island”, the island can be reached on a short-20 minute boat ride from Stone Town. You’ll see dozens of giant tortoises, many of which are over 200 years old, and the sandy white beaches and clear water are great for swimming and snorkeling.

The Arab Fort (Ngome Kongwe)

Known for its architecture and history, the building was constructed in the late 17th century. It was built on top of an even older Portuguese church as a way of defense against the occupying Portuguese forces before it was turned into a prison in the 19th century and a ladies’ tennis club before the 1964 Revolution. The amphitheater is still used today and you can catch a live performance on the 400-year-old stage.

Zanzibar consistently ranks as the home to some of the nicest beaches in the world. The island is less than 50 miles from Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. Zanzibar has its own international airport along with boat shuttles and flights to mainland Tanzania making it easily accessible no matter where you are coming from.

Zanzibar City, the biggest city and capital is famous for its historic Stonetown. Old spice and fish markets line the streets of what used to be the stopover point of trade between the East and West. Zanzibar was also where the slave trade was centered, and the slave museum will explain the sad history behind it.

Freddie Mercury’s house from when he was a young child is also in the historic district, along with the old fort and the Sultan’s palace. Despite all the great things to do here, don’t get too caught up in the big city because the best beaches are in the North!

Nungwi is the northern part of the island with the famous white sand beaches and beautiful turquoise water. ATVing, snorkeling, fishing, and relaxing on the beach are some of the best activities here. Scuba diving courses and other water activities can keep you busy for weeks and will make you fall in love with the incredible island!
