The Wilds is the latest Amazon series everyone is talking about, but its premise and the amazing young cast aren’t the only things that caught our eye. The filming locations in this teen drama are truly stunning, which isn’t much of a surprise since it was filmed in New Zealand.

The Wilds centers on a group of teens who find themselves stranded on a deserted island after their plane heading to Hawaii crashes in the middle of nowhere. The series, however, wasn’t filmed in Hawaii, and various locations across Auckland in New Zealand served as the setting.

Piha Beach

New Zealand is well-known for its black sand beaches, and one of them was heavily featured in The Wilds. Piha Beach, located around 40 kilometers west of Auckland, served as an amazing backdrop for this intriguing series and the iconic Lion Rock formation was visible in several scenes throughout the show.

Bethells Beach

According to IMDb, some of the scenes were filmed on Bethells Beach, another popular day-trip spot near Auckland. A couple of locations around the city were featured in the flashback scenes taking place before the girls got stuck on the island, including the West Wave Pool, Karaka Lakes Park, and the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School in Newton.

It’s always amazing to mix two of your passions into one and share them with the rest of the world. That’s exactly what film and travel enthusiast Andrea David managed to do after she decided to start looking for the iconic filming locations around the world.

David embarked on this amazing journey after exploring the influence of cinema on tourist habits in her thesis. She liked it so much that she kept on traveling to different filming locations even after her theses was done, and she’s still doing it to this day.

After a while, she came to the conclusion it’s easier to ask locals for directions if she brings pictures along, and this was a real game-changer. She started taking photos that placed the iconic movie scenes in real life and managed to attract over half a million followers with her Instagram page filmtourismus.

Hard-core movie buffs now see her as a valuable source of inspiration, because they wouldn’t know where to look if it wasn’t for her. Her incredible photos blur the line between fantasy and fiction and prove that all the places we’ve seen on the silver screen aren’t out of reach.
