The past twelve months have represented the most challenging period for travel in recent history. The COVID-19 pandemic has reduced mobility, closed country borders, and limited people from traveling for most of the past year.

To this day, most of the world’s countries are not letting in international travelers for leisure vacations, and it might seem like this situation will never end. But will it, soon?

Vaccinations in most of the developed world are being administered and distributed at a rapid rate. Experts point to the immunity generated by vaccinations as the most key step for our world regaining something similar to normalcy and reaching herd immunity.

The moment at which herd immunity is reached, which will come accompanied by a lower caseload and hospitalization rates, is the most likely stepping stone for the re-opening of countries and the return of international travel.

So, when might this happen? Most developed nations are aiming to finish the vaccination of a large majority of their populations at some point between this summer and this fall. This means that, if things go well, much of the world may open up by the time fall or winter 2021 comes around. Summer is unlikely, but looking just a few months later, there is hope on the horizon.

However, keep in mind that not all travel destinations are in the developed world and that this may force them to wait until they get their hands on enough vaccinations to keep their own populations safe. We will just have to wait and see.

It seems as if our long travel nightmare might be finally coming to an end, so start thinking about where your dreams might take you.

Flying in a COVID-19-conditioned world is a tough and often nerve-wracking task. While studies have indicated that traveling on planes is relatively safe, there are some things you’ll want to do in order to reduce your chances of getting sick while traveling.

Here are some things you should have on hand at all times while flying.

Hand Sanitizer

The amount of common surfaces you’ll touch while in a plane and in airports is considerable, and you’ll want to sanitize your hands with an alcohol-based solution after touching them. This will kill almost all germs that might end up on your hands and possibly infecting you.

A Quality Mask

Flying with a mask is mandatory almost everywhere on Earth now, but not all masks are equal. Don’t opt for a simple bandana or plastic shield, which allows plenty of germs in. Instead, opt for a quality cloth mask, a surgical mask, or an N95 mask, all of which offer higher levels of protection.

Sanitizing Wipes

While it might be tempting to just settle into your flight routine while on a plane, it’s important to take sanitizing wipes with you to take care of any germs that flight cleanup crews might not have been able to get to. This will allow you to feel comfortable when touching in-flight entertainment systems, tray tables, and the like.

As more and more flights begin to be offered as travel restrictions are eased in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, you might be looking at taking a flight in the coming months as part of your vacation.

While airplanes are generally considered a safe traveling method due to the constant air ventilation on-board, there are some things that you should still take into account and research before booking. Here they are.

Cancellation Policy

An airline’s cancellation policy is a critical thing to be aware of before booking a flight in 2020. If you were to get sick or if new travel restrictions were to be put in place, having the option to get at least a partial refund on the money you paid to fly is a big plus.

Flight Occupancy

Before booking most flights, airlines will offer you the chance to see the current seating situation on your flight. If you see that the flight is going to be close to full, it might be better to skip the one you’re looking at and find one with a little bit more social distance.

The Airline’s Social Distancing Practices

Related to the previous point, it’s also smart to book with companies with a social distancing plan in place on board before flying. No matter how much the air is ventilated in an airplane cabin, it still isn’t a great idea to sit in a row jammed in with more people than necessary.

While many of us have finally returned to traveling following the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak earlier this year, there are some precautions and safety tips that we should all keep in mind while venturing out.

A number of risky activities can be what gets a traveler ill while on vacation, and it’s important to remember not to do the following things if you want to travel in a responsible and safe way.

Traveling by Bus

If at all possible, traveling by bus is something that should be avoided during the ongoing global pandemic. The lack of ventilation and close quarters in this transportation option makes it a risky choice for travelers, who should try opting for safer methods like flying or driving.

Not Wearing a Mask

No matter where you are, unless it’s a place where you’re alone by yourself or with the members of your traveling party, you should always wear a mask if there’s any chance that you’ll happen upon other people. This keeps both yourself and the population at large safe.

Forgetting to Sanitize

Sanitizing your hands and the environment that you come into contact with should be a priority during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and that doesn’t change when it comes to travel. Use hand sanitizer as much as you can on your hands, and be sure to sanitize and disinfect other things that you touch like your mobile phone and your tray table on a plane.
