Tokyo, Japan, is a magical city that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. But the reason why most don’t is the fact that the city can be expensive for tourists. With this in mind, we decided to share some of the best ways you can explore Tokyo if you are a budget traveler.

Choose Your Trip Date Wisely

The best way to turn Tokyo into a budget destination is to avoid peak season. Instead, pick an off-season date when the accommodation and service prices are at their lowest.

Stay at a Hostel

Hostels are your best bet if you have a tight budget. They don’t offer much besides a bed, but they can be dirt cheap.

Walk if You Can

Getting around Tokyo is not a cheap affair, so if your destination is not far away, you are better off walking there than anything else. Even public transportation is pricey since it is owned by private companies.

Eat at Konbini

Konbini are convenience stores that are open 24/7 and offer a variety of products, including food. You’ll find the cheapest eats here, with the selection being quite admirable.

Shop at Thrift Shops

If you are set on shopping, steer clear of shopping malls. Instead, hit one of the city’s many thrift and second-hand shops that offer quality items at affordable prices.

The majority of the tallest buildings in Japan can be found in Tokyo, which is home to some of the most impressive towers and skyscrapers in the world.

Here are three of the most imposing structures you can spot while admiring the beautiful skyline of the Japanese capital.

Tokyo Skytree

At the full height of 2,080 ft. (634.0 meters), Tokyo Skytree is currently the tallest tower in the world, and the second tallest structure overall after the Burj Khalifa. It primarily serves as a television and radio broadcast site, but it’s also a popular tourist attraction thanks to its observation deck.

Tokyo Tower

Tokyo’s second-tallest structure is extremely reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower, but in vibrant white and orange shades due to air safety regulations. It features two impressive observation decks, and approximately 150 million tourists walk through its doors every year.

Toranomon Hills

Tokyo, Japan’s famous for its secret bars, and a new hidden gem just opened up in the city. Nintendo fans are going to want to visit this spot—it’s a cafe dedicated to Nintendo called 84. The cafe was even created by a former Nintendo Co. employee and it’s full of video game artifacts, art, and memorabilia.

Toru Hashimoto is the man who created the secret cafe that has all things Super Mario, Pokemon, and Dragon Quest. Trying to find the spot is an experience, but it’s worth it. You won’t find it on any map and there aren’t any sigs of the door. It’s hidden deep in the Sibuya district.

The owner transformed a members-only diner into a cafe that’s not open to anyone who can find it. According to the company’s website, it’s for “people who love games, people who like games a lot, people who like games a little, people who don’t like or hate games, people who don’t understand games at all.”

Inside you’ll find artifacts that date back to Hashimoto’s time working for Nintendo and ones he’s collected over the years. There are also autographs from video game creators like Shigeki Morimoto, who’s one of the Pokemon franchise creators and a cafe regular.

The address is only given to those who make reservations, but they’ve asked to keep it top-secret, so others can try and locate 84. To make reservations visit the cafe’s website.

“Lost in Translation” is one of the most beloved movies of the 21st century, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as lost souls who meet up in Tokyo by pure coincidence and end up forming a close bond while exploring the city together. Fans of this movie will undoubtedly remember scenes shot at these three spots in the Japanese capital, which you should take time to see on your next vacation in Tokyo.

New York Bar

Arguably the most recognizable shot in the movie was filmed at the New York Bar in the Park Hyatt Hotel. This bar not only serves up good food and tasty drinks, but was selected as a shooting site due to its eye-catching bar with panoramic views of the entire city.

Joganji Temple

Easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it, Joganji Temple is an authentic little piece of Buddhist tradition located on a hill in the western suburbs of the city. When you see it, you’ll recognize it as a place where Johansson’s lost character stumbles around while contemplating her existence.

Kabukicho

Some of the most eye-catching scenes in the film were filmed in Kabukicho, often described as the Times Square of Tokyo. Massive, neon advertisements, bright lights, and signs dominate this district where Murray and Johansson can be seen stumbling around late at night in the film.

Toranomon Hills is Tokyo’s tallest skyscraper, but you won’t see countless tourists flocking around it. This complex mostly consists of offices and private apartments. The luxurious Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills hotel also takes up several of its floors.
