Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is considered by many to be one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cities in Northern Europe. Full of medieval castle walls, towering church bell towers, cobblestone streets, and beautiful public squares, there is an endless number of sights to see and enjoy. Here are the ones we most recommend.

Old Town

An obvious place to start your tour of Tallinn is with a tour of the Old Town, which features stunning architecture and locals wearing medieval costumes to help you imagine what the Old Town may have been like when it was well, not “old” yet.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Another common tourist favorite in Tallinn is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which is artful and beautiful on the inside and outside, with mind-blowing architecture on display from every angle. Plus, it has free entrance!

Viru Gates

In order to get into Old Town, you can enter through Viru Gate, which was part of Tallinn’s defense system in the fourteenth century. With so many amazing places to visit in Europe, who has time for Tallinn – the Estonian capital? It’s not too close to any other big European cities – except for Helsinki, and that’s by boat. However, if you enjoy exploring history, art, and architecture, this northern Europe city may have a lot more to offer than you think.

Tallinn is one of the rare European cities that has a well-preserved historical center. It hosts a fortress that was built in 1050 A.D. which is located on a hill in the center of the city. The 14th-century architectural masterpieces are nearby and it’s impressive that they survived centuries of changes, wars, and conquerors.

The architecture of the city was influenced by many different cultures over time. The city is an eclectic mix of Danish, Swedish, and German influences with its historical center being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Epping Tower offers a glimpse into Estonian medieval history. Those who’re more into art can enjoy artworks from the Social Realism current and classics from the 18th century Estonia. All this tells us that Tallinn is a true gem that’s just waiting to be discovered by a horde of tourists.
