Stockholm is home to more museums than we can count, but not all of them are dedicated to art, science, and history. Some of the most popular museums in this city are strangely specific and very distinctively Swedish, and that happens to be the case with these three.

ABBA The Museum

The iconic pop band ABBA is one of the first things that pops to mind when someone mentions Sweden, so it’s not a surprise to see there’s a whole museum dedicated to its legacy. In addition to pop group memorabilia, this museum also features interactive exhibits, including a studio and dance floor.

Museum of Spirits

Located a short walk away from the previous museum, this one is just as weirdly specific and equally exciting. It features exhibits on the history and culture of alcohol in Sweden, and it comes with an art gallery and a bar on its premises.

Vasa Museum

One of Stockholm’s top tourist attractions, this maritime museum deserves a spot on your travel itinerary even if you’re not crazy about naval history. It’s best known for displaying the fully intact historic ship Vasa which sank on her maiden voyage during the 17th century before becoming the shining star of this museum.

When we think of winter getaways, Sweden isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind. For many of us living in already-cold climates, we’d much rather head for a warm, sunny beach than venture any closer to the arctic circle. Still, sometimes life has other plans, or we find a flight deal too good to pass up and end up in a place we never expected. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Stockholm in the winter that don’t require being outside. Here are a few of our favorites.

Tour the Royal Palace

The UK isn’t the only country with a palace worth exploring. In the historical heart of Gamla Stan, the Swedish Royal Palace stands proudly as both the official residence of the Swedish monarchy and a testament to the country’s rich heritage. Its lavish halls and Royal Apartments are adorned with priceless artifacts, and its five internal museums are filled with fascinating exhibitions that shine light on the country’s royal past.

Explore Moderna Museet

Art lovers should be sure to check out Moderna Museet, a contemporary art museum located on Skeppsholmen island in the center of Stockholm. Home to an impressive collection of Swedish and international works by artists including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, the museum is a great place to escape the cold and spend some time learning about major artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Unwind at Centralbadet Spa

There’s nothing like a hot bath to warm up when it’s chilly outside, so why not make a day of it and book a treatment or two at one of Stockholm’s most prominent spas? For over 100 years, Centralbadet has offered personalized treatments, wellness classes, and saunas in a beautiful art nouveau building on the city’s iconic Drottninggatan street. When you’re finished, head to the in-house Eco-Bar for an organic meal and a cup of tea.

Stockholm’s complex public transit system doubles up as the longest public art gallery. More than 100 stations have collaborated to offer unique art installments that connect together to form a huge city-wide gallery.

The subway system was created in 1941 and opened for public use in 1950. Since then, the stations have been filled with paintings, sculptures, and elaborate mosaics. Traveling through Stokholm by the subway is like having access to a giant free public art gallery.

The gallery is made possible through government funding. Maintainance work is necessary to ensure that the beautiful artworks are protected from vandals.

Many of the stations not only contain paintings, but have been transformed into colorful artworks themselves. The tunnels have been painted and adapted to become a unique space for tourists and locals to enjoy.

If you are visiting Stockholm, make sure you add Stockholm’s subway system to do your to-do list. Hopping between stations is a surprisingly wonderful way to spend the afternoon – especially when it’s raining!
