Getting a good sleep while traveling is challenging for a number of reasons. You might feel the consequences of jet lag, be stressed about your travel itinerary, or simply be willing to sacrifice sleep to see and experience more.

While travelers are often willing to put up with the lack of good sleep, they often don’t realize that it can lead to unwanted consequences. Without enough sleep, you can get moody and tired, which greatly affects your experience. If you want to avoid this and get a better sleep while traveling, follow these tips.

Follow Your Usual Sleep Routine

Make sure to follow your usual sleep routine as closely as possible. Brain is accustomed to certain sleep signals and providing them even when away from home will help you fall asleep faster.

Bring Sleep-Aiding Items

When packing for your trip, sacrifice a few T-shirts or a pair of shoes for some sleep-aiding items like earplugs, sleep masks, or even your own pillow.

Prepare Your Body for Different Time Zones

If you are traveling to a different time zone, prepare your body for the change. Slowly adjust time of going to bed and waking up until you get in line with the usual sleep time at your destination. This will mitigate the effects of jet lag and provide you a great sleep starting from the first night.

Adopt Good Sleep Habits

Adopting just a few good sleep habits when traveling will do wonders. This can include avoiding heavy meals late at night, staying clear of alcoholic drinks, and putting away your phone as soon as your head touches the pillow.

As exciting as unfamiliar destinations can be, for someone with a tendency for sleep problems and insomnia, this can mean trouble. From unfamiliar hotel beds to unexpected noises—potential challenges abound. Here are some ways to improve your chances of sleeping so you won’t have to give up traveling.

Plan Ahead

Choose flights that fit your existing sleep schedule. Overnight flights can be a great way to maximize your travel time while getting some rest. Also, bring along your own travel pillow and blanket for added comfort.

Stay Hydrated, Not Over-Hydrated

Drink plenty of water but cut back on it in the hours leading up to bedtime to avoid midnight bathroom trips. They really have a way of messing up a well-deserved, consecutive night’s sleep.

Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Pack earplugs, an eye mask, and even a white noise device or app to block out unfamiliar sounds and lights. Make your sleeping space as cozy and quiet as possible, whether you’re in a hostel, Airbnb, or a fancy hotel.

Watch Your Diet

Avoid caffeine or heavy meals as you get close to bedtime, as these are likely to interfere with your sleep. Instead, opt for a fruit or a handful of nuts to keep you satisfied without keeping you up.

Stay Active

Do your best to exercise during the day—yes, even on vacation—to help regulate your sleep patterns. Even a short walk can work wonders! Just make sure to avoid strenuous activities before bed.

If you’ve ever attempted to take a nap at the airport during a layover, you’ll know that level 3 advanced math is probably easier to do. Falling asleep can be tricky at the best of times if you battle insomnia or the like, but doing so while traveling is especially difficult.

The discovery of white noise has been a game-changer for many people who struggle to sleep. There is a spectrum of audible sounds and white noise contains all frequencies. Similar to the sound of static on an untuned radio or television, white noise can drown out disturbing noises in your environment which threaten to wake you up.

Those who rely on white noise to catch some Z’s usually employ a white noise machine, but those are not always easy to lug around when traveling. Thankfully, your iPhone has an easy hack.

If you have an iPhone 6S or newer, and are running iOS 15 or above, you simply need to go to Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut, and then select Background Sounds. This will enable you to triple-click the side button or home button to play white noise.

Try it next time you fancy taking a nap on an airplane.
